
Anderson Leads Podium Sweep at Big West Heptathlon

IRVINE, Calif. - Freshman Joy Anderson won the Big West heptathlon to lead UC Irvine women's track & field to the conference's first podium sweep since 2015 Saturday at Anteater Stadium.
Anderson finished the two-day, seven-event competition with a personal-best score of 5,740, breaking her own school record by 168 points. Her PR ranks 10th in all of NCAA Division I this season. She was also the MPSF indoor champion in the pentathlon back in March.
Senior Jolie Robinson was the runner-up with a 123-point lifetime-best 5,647. It was her fourth-straight top-two showing in the Big West heptathlon as she took home the title in 2023 and 2024, while also placing second in 2025. Robinson's score ranks second in program history and 17th in the nation. The top-24 will qualify for the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in June.
Senior Jazzmine Davis claimed bronze with a PR 5,532 points. Senior Zharia Taylor made it a 1-2-3-4 showing for the 'Eaters with a personal-best 5,384 points. Davis improved on her No. 4 mark at UCI, while Taylor rose five spots to fifth in the record books.
Anderson established personal bests in all three events on Saturday. She opened with a leap of 5.51 meters (18-1) in the long jump, before hitting 36.89m (121-0) in the final round of the javelin. Anderson, who held the lead at the conclusion of Friday's action, dropped to second behind Robinson heading into the 800m where she clocked a nearly two-second PR 2:10.94, jumping back out front to secure the heptathlon title.
Robinson had an impressive day of competition, winning the long jump and javelin. On her third and final attempt in the long jump, Robinson came up clutch with a season-best 6.14 meters (20-1.75) to climb into the top-three on the overall leaderboard. Robinson once again saved her best for last in the javelin where she hit 41.55m (136-4) to begin the third round of throws. She then cemented her second-place showing with a lifetime-best 2:23.00 in the 800m.
Davis started her afternoon with a mark of 5.82 meters (19-1.25) in the long jump. That stood as the second-best of the meet behind only Robinson. Davis then had a toss of 33.00m (108-3) in the javelin, before establishing an 800m personal-record 2:20.05 to move up one spot to third in the standings.
Taylor had the fifth-best mark in the long jump with a leap of 5.75m (18-10.5). She was consistent throughout the competition with her other two attempts measuring at 5.74m (18-10). Taylor followed with a personal-record 33.83m (111-0) in the javelin. She added a five-second PR 2:23.71 in the 800m to rise from fifth to fourth on the leaderboard.
The Anteaters scored 29 points which they will carry into next weekend's Big West Championship events at Long Beach State, May 15-16.
