A trio of matches against UC Santa Barbara are on tap this week for the Anteaters.
UCI will travel to Santa Barbara Wednesday (Mar. 31) for a 4:00 p.m. first serve from Robertson Gym.
The teams will return to Irvine for two more matches Friday and Saturday (Apr. 2-3). Both start at 4:00 p.m. from the Bren Events Center.
The first two matches will count toward the Big West standings, while the third is a non-conference contest.
Saturday is the final scheduled home match of the season. UCI has four players ending their eligibility this season - Scott Stadick, Joel Schneidmiller, Sean Dennis and AJ Faille.
MEETING THE GAUCHOS AGAIN
The two teams met earlier for a pair of non-conference tilts in Santa Barbara on Mar. 7. The doubleheader was swept by the Gauchos, winning the morning match 3-0 and the nightcap 3-1.
In the first two meetings, the Gauchos had one more kill than the Anteaters (89-88), but out-hit the Anteaters .360 to .292. UCSB's defense was the difference, out-digging (64-52) and out-blocking (12.5-9.0) UCI.
In the second meeting, UCI had its second best hitting performance of the year with a .311 ( 49 - 16 - 106 ) performance. The 49 kills are the most in a contest that didn't go five and fourth overall this season for the Anteaters. UCI also had a season-high seven aces.
Joel Schneidmiller lit it up from the service line with four aces in the second meeting and two in the first. The outside hitter had 18.5 points in the second meeting which is the third highest point total for an Anteater this season.
Outside hitter Francesco Sani averaged 3.29 kills and setter Dylan Zhai posted a 10.00 set assist average over the two matches. Opposite Jonny Bowles averaged 2.57 kills and 1.71 digs against the Gauchos.
ON THE RECORDS
UCI is 2-8 overall and 2-4 in the Big West. The Anteaters have been able to take at least one set off of every opponent they have played, including all Top 10 teams they've seen.
UCSB is 7-4 overall and 3-3 in the Big West. The Gauchos are coming off of back-to-back sweeps over CSUN last weekend.
The Anteaters are looking to stop a three-match losing skid and pick up their first win on the road (0-5).
SENIORS IN THE RECORD BOOKS
Scott Stadick and Joel Schneidmiller have both inked their names in the UCI record book.
Stadick is the career leader in solo blocks (98), block assists (481) and total blocks (579).
His 12 total blocks against UC San Diego are the most in the country this season. For the season, the graduate student is averaging 0.98 blocks per set.
Schneidmiller is tied for fourth in all-time aces with 107. His 46 aces in 2019 is tied for sixth most in a season.
He is third in the Big West in kills (3.76), points (4.45), aces (0.42) and attack attempts (8.05). The outside hitter put away 28 kills versus the Tritons, which are the third most nationally.
NEW DAY DAHMING
Redshirt freshman Doug Dahm has set a new career-high in each of the last four outings. He had a personal best 14 kills versus Long Beach State last Saturday. He recorded a career-best five digs in the first meeting with The Beach.
The outside hitter is averaging 2.33 kills and 0.78 digs.
CAMPBELL AT THE NET
Middle blocker Connor Campbell had a breakout weekend, averaging 1.11 blocks over nine sets. He had a career-high three solo blocks and seven total blocks in the second match with LBSU. The freshman is averaging 0.63 blocks on the year and 0.53 kills.
ZHAI TIME
Freshman setter Dylan Zhai is averaging 8.34 set assists, which is sixth in the Big West. He started both matches versus UCSB and every match since. He also averages 1.29 digs per game.
LAST TIME OUT
The Anteaters dropped two matches against No. 7 Long Beach State.
In the first meeting, Schneidmiller led the Anteaters with 15 kills, seven digs, three block assists and an ace.
In the second meeting, UCI won the first two sets, but watched LBSU win the next three to spoil the upset. Schneidmiller led again with 16 kills, while libero Cole Gillis recorded a career-high 13 digs.
