No. 6 UCI Survives Late Push to Defeat No. 10 Michigan

IRVINE, Calif. – No. 6 UC Irvine survived a late push by No. 10 Michigan to defeat the Wolverines, 9-8, Saturday afternoon at the Barbara Kalbus Invitational held at the Anteater Aquatic Center.
The Anteaters pick up their 11th win of the season, improving to 11-5 overall. Michigan moves to 6-8 on the season.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
> Tara Prentice provided much of the offense for the 'Eaters, recording four goals. Elena Flynn also pitched in with two goals on the afternoon
> Also scoring for the Anteaters were Jessica Lynch, Isabel Rack, and Megan Falcon
> In the net, Morgan Jones had a game-high 11 saves.
> The Anteaters shot 9-30 (.300) overall and 3-8 (.375) on power plays.
> Michigan was led by Erin Neustrom and Maddie O'Reilly scoring two goals apiece, while Heidi Ritner tallied ten saves in goal.
Quarter One
> Flynn got the 'Eaters on the board first, scoring off a pass from Falcon, 1-0 at 3:57
> Prentice and Lynch followed with goals of their own, helping UC Irvine to a 3-0 lead
> The Wolverines were held scoreless, with Jones logging six saves
Quarter Two
> The Wolverines scored first in the second quarter, cutting the UCI lead to 3-1 with 5:34 remaining
> After a score by Prentice (4:03) put the 'Eaters back up by three, Michigan countered with goals from Emily Ritner (3:45) and O'Reilly (2:42) to get within one, 4-3
> Prentice added her third goal of the afternoon at 1:30, but Michigan responded with one of their own, keeping the UCI lead at 5-4 going into the half
Quarter Three
> Michigan came out of the break hot, scoring two goals in the first 1:30 of the quarter to take their first lead of the game, 6-5
> The Anteaters evened it up 6-6 on a score from Rack at 2:00, but the Wolverines quickly regained a 7-6 lead with 1:34 remaining
Quarter Four
> Flynn and Falcon scored on back-to-back possessions to put the 'Eaters back on top 8-7 with 5:56 to play
> Prentice followed with a converted penalty shot to extend the UCI lead to 9-7 at 3:24
> The Wolverines added a goal with 0:49 remaining, and had the last shot as time expired, but it sailed just wide of the goal, securing a tight 9-8 victory for the Anteaters
