Late Surge Not Enough in 4-2 Loss

PULLMAN, Wash. --- UC Irvine women's soccer traveled north for a neutral site match, but fell to Texas Tech, 4-2, Sunday afternoon at Lower Soccer Field as part of the Cougar Classic.

Air Raid
Texas Tech (7-1-0) wasted no time getting on the board going on the attack and scoring in the second minute. Kirsten Davis rumbled up the right wing and fired inside the far post for the 1-0 Texas Tech lead.

The Red Raiders built on their lead getting some luck in the 15th minute. They took the ball along the endline and fed it back into the box clipping an Anteater defender's arm leading to a penalty kick. Hannah Anderson stepped up and converted for a 2-0 Texas Tech lead.

The lead grew to 3-0 in the 23rd minute as Davis pounced once again capitalizing on a turnover, driving, and taking on UCI (1-7-0) keeper Maddie Newsom 1-v-1. Newsom stepped up to save the first shot, but the rebound came back to Davis who put the next shot away.

Anteater Time
UC Irvine found its strike as the second half began getting on the board in the first minute. Jessica Miclat did the dirty work scoring her first of the season 31 seconds into the second half getting assists from Destinee Manzo and Alex Jaquez as they now trailed 3-1.

The second half played out more evenly than the first, but UCI struggled to find another tally before the Red Raiders did as Macy Schultz scored TTU's fourth of the afternoon in the 84th minute.

The 'Eaters cut the deficit back to two goals with a strike with 20 seconds left in regulation off the foot of Carley Brown.

Final Score: Texas Tech 4, UC Irvine 2
The 'Eaters matched their highest goal total of the season with two, but now sit at 1-7-0 in 2019. Miclat's goal is the fifth of her career giving her a goal in every season of her collegiate career and 14 career points.

Carley Brown's goal was the first of her career coming a week after she put up her first career point. Assists on the match came from Alex Jaquez, Kala McDaniel, and Destinee Manzo. Jaquez's assist is the second of her career while McDaniel and Manzo each earned their first. Manzo's assist is also the first point of her collegiate career.

Texas Tech's star Kirsten Davis finished with two goals and an assist while leading all players with four shots. The Red Raiders outshot UCI, 11-6, and put nine of their shots on target. Maddie Newsom saved five shots opposed to TTU keeper Marissa Zucchetto's one
