'Eaters Start 2019 with SDSU, Marymount Home Exhibitions

FIRST TOUCHES
UC Irvine men's soccer will get its first competitive test of the season less than a week after its first official practice playing two home exhibition matches this week starting Monday, August 19, against San Diego State at 5:00 p.m. followed by a warmup with NAIA side Marymount California, Saturday, August 24, starting at 7:00 p.m.
STORYLINES
For the second year in a row UCI will play a pair of exhibition matches. The 'Eaters defeated Bakersfield at home and lost at UCLA in 2018
UC Irvine is 3-1-1 in exhibition matches dating back to 2014 which includes a home win vs. Cal and road draw at UNLV
The Anteaters begin the 2019 season ranked No. 25 according to United Soccer Coaches poll. UCI spent a few weeks late in the 2018 season in the rankings finishing a few votes out of it in the final poll. It was UC Irvine first return to the polls since 2015, a season where they also began the season ranked
With 22 players that saw minutes in 2018, 12 of them will return to the squad including six starters in Jose Ortiz, Alvaro Quezada, Michael Orozco, Jalani Ambrose, Lawrence Yamaguchi, and Victor Falck
The Anteaters bring in a talented class of 14 newcomers rated as the top recruiting class in the nation by Top Drawer Soccer. Five of the newcomers are transfers from programs such as New Mexico, San Francisco, Coastal Carolina, and Portland, while another four Anteaters enter the mix after redshirting in their first year with the program in 2018

SAN DIEGO STATE AZTECS
UC Irvine and San Diego State have met 23 times when it counted over their histories with UCI winning just six times along with four draws. SDSU came from behind to win with two goals in the final eight minutes of regulation and overtime to swipe a victory from UCI. SDSU finished 2018 at 7-10-1, its fifth season in the last six without a winning record. Aztec head coach Lev Kirshner is in his 20th season leading the program winning 130 matches and reaching the NCAA Tournament three times out of the competitive Pac-12 Conference. Five Aztecs return that played over 1,000 minutes led by junior Pablo Pelaez who led the way with six goals and 13 points. Max Watkin is the most experienced in net after allowing five goals in seven matches with two shutouts
MARYMOUNT CALIFORNIA MARINERS
Marymount California University sits in Rancho Palos Verdes in Southern California, an NAIA school part of the Cal Pac Conference. This will be the first meeting between the programs, but third match of the season for Marymount as it defeated Trinity Western on August 15 and will matchup with El Camino College August 21. The Mariners are receiving votes early on in the national rankings, and are under the control of new head coach, Joe Flanagan, who came from Division II Cal State Dominguez Hills. The Mariners boast a diverse roster with players hailing from five different European countries, two in Africa, Mexico, and Brazil. 10 players have transferred from four-year colleges, and two from DI schools like Robert Morris and Cal State Fullerton
