SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Senior Barbara Coward won the hammer throw in dramatic fashion to highlight the final day of the Big West Championships for the UC Irvine women's track & field team Saturday at Pauley Track Facility.
Coward, who entered the meet as the No. 1 seed, was locked in a back-and-forth battle with No. 2 seed De'Ondra Young of Long Beach State. Young held an early lead before Coward took over the top spot on her third attempt in the second flight where she recorded a distance of 194-10.
Young would reclaim the advantage at 195-05 to start the final round. Then, on her last attempt of the competition, Coward came up big under pressure with a heave of 195-06 to edge Young for the title. It was Coward's second first-place finish of the weekend as she became the Big West's first double champion in the discus and hammer since 2015.
Junior Brianna Villanueva added her second all-conference performance, coming in third in the hammer with a mark of 185-03.
Senior Elizabeth Akindele also had a runner-up showing in the shot put as she moved into second place with a season-best 46-03.25 on her final attempt.
Freshman Lorraine Nance scored in the triple jump where she was eighth overall (38-06).
On the track, freshman Zani Meaders made her way onto the podium with a third-place finish. Meaders ran a personal-record 55.00, climbing one spot to No. 3 in program history.
Senior Julia Sambvani scored in the 400m hurdles where she registered a season-best 61.44 (6th).
Freshman Hannah Chau, who was coming off a top-eight finish in last night's 10K, picked up a couple more points in the 5000m as she notched a season-best 17:21.20 to come in seventh. Chau is the first Anteater to score in both the 5K and 10K since Carlotta Pham in 2013.
The quartet of Natalie Koppel, Hope Bushnell, Sambvani and Mikayla Scott narrowly missed a top-three finish in the 4x100 relay with a season-best 46.76. They were just six-hundredths of a second behind third-place Hawai'i.
Scott, Meaders, Sambvani and freshman Destiny Whitaker also combined for a season-best 3:47.64 in the 4x400 (6th).
As a team, the 'Eaters finished seventh with 64 points.
