Apfelbach Earns Buffalo Wild Wings Anteater of the Week

This week's Buffalo Wild Wings Anteater of the Week is Karl Apfelbach of the men's volleyball team. The two-time All-Big West opposite had a big weekend for the 'Eaters, helping them upset No. 3 UC Santa Barbara in back-to-back weekend matchups. Sweeping the Gauchos allowed UC Irvine to move into third place in the conference standings as they get ready to compete in the Big West Tournament.
In Friday night's 3-0 victory over UCSB at the Bren Events Center, Apfelbach finished with a team-high 11 kills, 12 digs, four aces and two blocks. Just 24 hours later, he led the Anteaters to a 3-1 win at UC Santa Barbara with 15 kills, three blocks and a season-best five aces.
For the week, the senior from Shorewood, Wis., averaged 3.71 kills, 2.14 digs and 1.29 aces per set, while hitting at a .365 clip.
Apfelbach has been productive all season for the 'Eaters as he recently received his second consecutive All-Big West honor and moved into 10th all-time in aces in UC Irvine's record book.
The Anteaters finished the season on a high note and will look to carry that momentum into the Big West Championships at Hawai'i, April 18-20. UCI is seeded third and begins tournament play on Thursday against No. 6 seed UC San Diego.
