UCI Wraps up Home Opener with Four Event Wins

IRVINE, Calif. - The sprinters led the 'Eaters on the second and final day of the UC Irvine Spring Break Collegiate Classic Saturday at Anteater Stadium.
Senior Hope Bushnell, who was making her outdoor season debut, was a double champion in the 100m and 200m. She was the only competitor to run a sub-12 second time in the 100m, clocking in at 11.88. Bushnell came back an hour later to finish ahead of the pack in the 200m at 24.37 seconds.
Freshman Zani Meaders also cruised to the 400m title, beating the rest of the field by over a second. She posted the eighth-best time in program history at 55.74. Sophomore Mikayla Scott was the runner-up (57.08).
Meaders added a fifth-place showing in the 200m (24.97), while Scott was sixth (25.08). Sophomore Natalie Koppel notched a season-best 12.41 to come in fourth in the 100m.
Senior Julia Sambvani, Meaders, freshman Briana Johnson and Scott also combined for a victory in the 4x400 relay. Scott moved up two spots early in the anchor leg before eventually catching Army down the home stretch for the win at 3:48.90.
In the 100m hurdles, junior Imani Jones ran a personal-record 14.57 to place third overall. Junior Cecily Montanez also paced a quartet of Anteaters in the 400m hurdles with a lifetime-best 65.09 (6th).
Freshmen Destiny Whitaker (2:16.49) and Natalie Ewe (4:47.56) were seventh in the 800m and 1500m, respectively.
In the field events, junior Brianna Villanueva placed third in the discus with a toss of 153-02. Senior Elizabeth Akindele contributed a sixth-place performance in the shot put (43-04.5).
Freshman Lorraine Nance came in fifth in the triple jump with a leap of 38-04. Sophomore Hanna Coloma wasn't far behind in sixth in her first collegiate triple jump competition (36-11.5).
Senior pole vaulter Adrienne Lee also cleared a season-best 11-03.75 to tie for sixth.
Up next, UC Irvine will head to the Inland Empire for the UC Riverside Spring Classic, March 22-23.
