IRVINE, Calif. - The UC Irvine women's cross country team is back in action after a three-week hiatus as it travels to Riverside for the Highlander Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 19. The Anteaters have 13 individuals entered in the women's 6000-meter race which is slated for an 8:40 a.m. start at the UCR Ag/Ops Course.
QUICK HITS
• This marks the eighth consecutive year the 'Eaters are competing in the Highlander Invitational.
• During that stretch, they had a high finish of fourth in 2012 and 2016.
• The Highlander Invite is UCI's final tune-up before the Big West Championships on Nov. 2.
• Saturday's race will be run on the same course as the upcoming conference meet.
• Sophomore Hannah Chau has led the Anteaters in each of the first three races of the season.
• At the UCR Invitational, she ran the fourth-fastest 6K in program history at 20:44.5.
• Chau is one of eight returning letterwinners from last year's squad that took fifth at the Big West Championships.
• That was UC Irvine's best conference showing since 2008.
• The 'Eaters officially welcomed distance coach Casey Kear to their cross country/track & field staff in August.
• Kear comes to Irvine from Long Beach State where he spent the previous two seasons.
LAST TIME OUT
• UC Irvine came in third out of 31 teams at The Master's University Invitational in Santa Clarita on Sept. 28.
• Hannah Chau led the way with a season-best third-place finish in a field of 305 runners.
• She completed the 5000-meter course in a personal-record 17:53.8.
• Freshman Elizabeth Celada Padilla notched her first top-20 showing with a lifetime-best 18:35.5.
• She saw nearly a one-minute improvement in her second collegiate 5K race.

• Freshman Claire Livengood (19:00.2) and sophomore Patricia Sanchez (19:22.7) also established PRs.
COACH'S CORNER
"The women's group is starting to race at the level they are training at. We need to focus on consistency. Our finishing order has changed every race, so if we can all click on the same day, then we can be a tough team." - UCI Distance Coach Casey Kear
