LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The UC Irvine women's water polo team fell to second-seeded Stanford by a score of 14-8 in the NCAA quarterfinals at the Uytengsu Aquatics Center Friday in Los Angeles.
UCI rallied with fourth goals in the fourth quarter, out-scoring Stanford, 4-2, but it was not enough to erase at 9-3 halftime deficit.
Competing in her final game for UCI, senior Natalie Seidemann led the team in scoring with two goals. Toni Shackelford, Corinna Toledo, Cara Borkovec, Julie Swieca and Danielle Ayala each scored once for the Anteaters.
Jenna Phreaner, Morgan Jones and Riley Shaw shared time in goal. Phreaner and Jones collected two saves apiece while Shaw had one.
"This group did a lot to come together towards the end of the season," said head coach Dan Klatt. "I am proud of our team. I think we had a lot of freshman who got to see what it takes to compete at a championship and at this level and hopefully they gained a lot of experience through this."
Mackenzie Wiley, Jordan Raney, Kat Klass, Aria Fischer and Madison Berggren led Stanford with two goals apiece. Julia Hermann and Eilsa Eichelberger each played in goal for the Cardinal. Hermann notched one save while Eichelberger grabbed two.
"Stanford came out very strong on offense and attacked us from the start," added Klatt. "We were challenged on defense and Stanford was able to come out and score from the start and we had to play catch up and play from behind after the first quarter."
Both teams each took 25 shots while Stanford held the advantage in steals (6-3). UCI struggled on extra-man situations, only converting on 2-of-8 while the Cardinal went 4-of-7.

Natalie Seidemann took a pass from Megan Falcon and fired a backhand as the keeper came out, to get UCI within three, 6-3, at 3:35. Stanford answered with a power play goal at 3:19. To close out the half, Shannon Cleary (:27) and Makenzie Fischer (:01) added goals to give Stanford a 9-3 lead at the break.
