No. 7 UCI Suffers 9-8 Loss to No. 10 UC Davis

IRVINE, Calif. – The seventh-ranked UC Irvine women's water polo team was edged by 10th-ranked UC Davis by a score of 9-8 Saturday afternoon at Schaal Aquatics Center.
With the loss UCI falls to 2-2 in the Big West and 9-12 overall. UCD improves to 17-8 on the season and 1-1 in the conference.
Tara Prentice and Corinna Toledo led the Anteaters with two goals apiece while Prentice nabbed three steals. Allie Loomis, Cara Borkovec, Keana Eldridge and Natalie Seidemann each added a goal. Jenna Phreaner notched 12 saves in goal.
The Aggies' Greta Kohlmoos had a game-high three goals while Kathleen Schafle had two. In goal, Caitlin Golding grabbed seven saves.
UCD got on the board first but UCI answered quickly to knot the game at one. The two teams exchanged points twice more as the game was tied, 3-3, after the first quarter.
The Aggies outscored the 'Eaters 3-2 in the second frame to take 6-5 lead into halftime. Borkovec and Prentice each had a goal for UCI while UCD's Schafle scored on five-meter-penalty shot with 12 seconds remaining in the quarter.
Prentice opened up the third quarter with an extra-man goal before Seidemann scored to give the Anteaters their only lead of the game, 7-6, with 5:05 left in the frame. UCD answered with back-to-back goals to retake the lead, 8-7, heading into the final quarter.
Toledo fired in a goal with 4:38 in the fourth quarter to make it an 8-8 game but UCD's Schafle ultimately scored the game winner, launching one past Phreaner with 2:28 left to play. UCI took a timeout and had two final shots but neither were able to get past Golding.
UCI returns to the pool for a game against Pacific Sunday, April 8 at 12 p.m.
