‘Eaters Win Black and Blue Rivalry, 11-8

IRVINE, Calif. – The eighth-ranked UC Irvine women's water polo team used a strong second half to leap over No. 17 Long Beach State, 11-8, Thursday night at Anteater Aquatics Complex.
With the victory, UCI concludes the regular season with an 11-13 overall record and 3-2 in the Big West.
The win tonight secures the 'Eaters position as the No. 3 seed at the Big West Tournament. UCI will play sixth-seeded CSUN Friday, April 27 at 2:00 p.m. in a first round game.
Long Beach State finished the season 11-13 overall and 2-3 in the conference. The 49ers will be the No. 4 seed at the tournament.
Isabel Rack tallied a game-high four goals to go along with one assist and a steal. Allie Loomis notched two goals while Tara Prentice had a team-best two steals.
Riley Shaw and Jenna Phreaner each spent a half in goal. Shaw grabbed one save while Phreaner tallied four.
UCI out-shot LBSU 30-23 and went 3-of-7 on powerplays while the 49ers were 5-of-10 on extra-man situations. The 'Eaters also converted on a five-meter penalty shot.
Alexandra Massier and Virginia Smith led LBSU with three goals each. Eirini Patras had five saves in goal.
The 49ers jumped out to a 4-2 lead after scoring all four goals on six-on-five situations. Isabel Rack had both of UCI's goals in the frame as the 'Eaters trailed by two after the first quarter.
Rack completed her hat trick, scoring just two minutes into the second quarter to make it a 3-2 game, before Loomis added a powerplay goal to knot the game, 4-4, at intermission. UCI shut out the 49ers in the second frame.
The Anteaters outscored LBSU 7-4 in the second half to seal the win.
The 49ers' Smith opened up the third frame with a goal but UCI's Cara Borkovec quickly answered, firing one in past Patras. Phreaner found Kayleigh Schultz for a breakaway goal before LBSU would tie it at six with 5:57 to play. UCI found its momentum and notched three more goals to round out the third quarter.
Rack notched her fourth goal of the game in the final quarter while Natalie Seidemann scored on a pass from Rack as the 'Eaters held off LBSU for the win.
The UC Irvine women's water polo team and UCI Athletics honored seven outstanding seniors at the conclusion of the game. Those players were Riley Shaw, Natalie Seidemann, Corinna Toledo, Julie Swieca, Keana Eldridge, Cara Borkovec and Allie Loomis.
