No. 9 UCI Advances to Big West Semifinals With 14-1 Win Over No. 19 CSUN

IRVINE, Calif. – 10 different 'Eaters scored as the third-seeded UC Irvine women's water polo team earned a dominating, 14-1, victory over sixth-seeded CSUN in the first round of the Big West Championships, Friday afternoon at Anteater Aquatics Complex.
The Anteaters, who are ranked ninth nationally, will face second-seed UC Davis at 3:00 p.m. tomorrow in the semifinals. The Aggies earned a first round bye and rank eighth nationally.
The 13-goal margin of victory is the most in Big West Tournament history.
10 different UCI players shared the scoring duties as Calysa Toledo, Cara Borkovec, Julie Swieca and Megan Falcon led the way with two goals apiece. Kayleigh Schultz, Raegan Castillo and Falcon also added two assists each.
Defensively, UCI totaled 22 steals with Keana Eldridge and Castillo grabbing four apiece. Jenna Phreaner played three quarters in goal notching five saves and a steal while Morgan Jones took over the goalkeeping duties for the final quarter, tallying four saves and two steals.
UCI only allowed one goal, the fewest amount scored by an opponent against the 'Eaters this season. CSUN's Katelyn Fairchild had the lone point, scoring in the third quarter.
The Matadors' Niki Van Vugt and Nathalie Brewster split time in the cage. Van Vugt tallied six saves while Brewster had one.
The Anteaters held a slight 22-21 advantage in shots and were a perfect 4-for-4 in extra-man situations while CSUN went 0-for-7 on powerplays.
The 'Eaters held the Matadors scoreless in the first half while notching six goals of their own. Swieca had two goals in the half, both on powerplay situations while Falcon tallied a goal as time expired in the second frame to give UCI a six-point advantage at intermission.
Isabel Rack opened up the third quarter with a made five-meter penalty shot before Fairchild put the Matadors on the board for the first time.
Borkovec and Calysa Toledo each notched two goals in the fourth quarter as the 'Eaters cruised to the 13-point win.
The Anteaters improve to 12-13 on the season and won their third-straight match. CSUN falls to 15-17 overall and will play fifth-seed UC Santa Barbara in the fifth-place game tomorrow at 11:00 a.m.
