Big Second Half Pushes No. 7 UCI Past No. 12 Hartwick, 12-8

IRVINE, Calif. – The seventh-ranked UC Irvine women's water polo team used a big second half to propel to a 12-8 non-conference win over No. 12 Hartwick Saturday at Anteater Aquatics Complex.
Winning its second game of the day, UCI improves to 9-11 overall. The Hawks drop to 25-7 on the season.
Prentice tallied four goals to lead the 'Eaters while Julie Swieca and Isabel Rack each added two. Prentice also grabbed three steals and dished out two assists. Jenna Phreaner had another impressive game in goal, notching a season-best 16 saves and one steal.
Hartwick's Lena Kotanchyan had a team-best three goals while L.J. Edwards notched two. Josette Santos made nine saves in goal.
UCI converted on 3-of-6 powerplays while Hartwick went 3-11 in extra-man situations. The Anteaters held slight advantages in shots (30-29) and steals (11-9).
Prentice put the 'Eaters on the board early but the Hawks tied it up with an extra-man goal at 3:56 in the first quarter. Allie Loomis found Isabel Rack for a six-on-five goal to make it a 2-1 game after the first frame.
Hartwick outscored UCI 3-1 in the second quarter to take a 4-3 lead into the intermission.
The Anteaters came out of halftime firing, scoring six goals to take a lead they would not relinquish. Prentice got things started before Kayleigh Schultz launched in another goal to give UCI a 4-4 lead at 5:55. The 'Eaters scored three more to take an 8-4 lead before Hartwick's Tori Wilson tallied a goal. Christina Reyes capped the frame, scoring with 2:04 left on the clock.
Prentice added her fourth goal of the game in the fourth quarter whiel Swieca notched two as UCI sealed the four-point win, 12-8.
UCI returns to the pool for a conference match against UC Davis Saturday, April 7 at 12:00 p.m.
