No. 7 UCI Suffers Overtime Loss to No. 8 Pacific

IRVINE, Calif. – No. 8 Pacific used two overtime goals to hand No. 7 UC Irvine a 12-11 double overtime loss in the seventh-place game at the Barbara Kalbus Invitational.
UCI finished 1-3 on the weekend and moves to 4-8 overall.
Trailing by one, a pass from Julie Swieca found Natalie Seidemann in the center with just under 30 seconds left in regulation. Seidemann turned and fired in a shot past the Tigers' goalkeeper to send the game into overtime.
An exclusion on Toni Shackelford in the first overtime period gave Pacific's Duarte the game winning goal on a five-meter penalty. Another ejection on the Anteaters resulted in a Tiger goal conversion in the second extra period.
Swieca notched one more to the fray with 40 seconds to play in overtime. A timeout was taken by UCI with five seconds to go in an attempt tie up the game followed by a shot from Tara Prentice that narrowly flew over the top of the cage.
Pacific got on the board first before UCI scored three unanswered goals to go up, 3-1. Swieca fired one into the back of the net off of a 5M penalty shot with 4:34 remaining in the first. Isabel Rack, Keana Eldridge and Allie Loomis added one apiece as the 'Eaters led the Tigers 4-2 after the first frame.
An exclusion on Cara Borkovec late in the second led to a power play goal by Pacific's top scorer, Mariana Duarte. UCI trailed by one, 6-5, going into halftime. Borkovec and Loomis converted on power plays in the third, but the Tigers continued to lead the Anteaters 8-7 at the end of the quarter.
Two big goals from Seidemann in the fourth quarter resulted in a tied game with 29 seconds to go in regulation play.
Freshman Morgan Jones defended the net for the 'Eaters, recording 14 saves in 32 minutes.
Loomis notched a hat trick with three goals while Seidemann and Swieca had two. Freshman Tara Prentice dished out three assists. As a team, UCI grabbed seven steals.
Eleven players shared scoring duties for UCI over three days of competition. Seidemann and Swieca both notched seven total goals for the weekend.
Top-ranked Stanford won the tournament after defeating No. 3 USC 9-3 in the championship game.
UCI begins Big West play with a game at Hawai'i Saturday, March 3rd at 6:00 p.m. PST.
