No. 7 UC Irvine Powers Past No. 11 LMU

IRVINE, Calif. – The No. 7 UC Irvine women's water polo started the Barbara Kalbus Invitational with a 12-5 win over No. 11 Loyola Marymount at the Anteater Aquatics Center Friday.
Senior Natalie Seidemann led the Anteaters (4-5) with four goals while freshman Tara Prentice got a hat trick behind a three-goal performance. Senior Allie Loomis dished out two assists and Corinna Toledo grabbed two steals.
Jenna Phreaner played all 32 minutes in goal, tallying eight saves.
As a team, UCI converted on 2-of-5 powerplays and out-shot the Lions 25-20. LMU struggled on extra-man opportunities, finishing 4-of-12.
Abbey Goose and Hana Vilanova led the Lions with two goals apiece while Claire Wright notched nine saves and three steals.
Seidemann got things started, converting on a five-meter penalty shot just 20 seconds into the game. LMU answered but Toni Schackelford notched another goal for UCI to give the hosts a 2-1 lead after the first quarter.
The Anteaters broke open the game scoring five unanswered goals to start the second frame to go up 6-2 at the half. Seidemann scored twice in the stretch while Loomis had two assists.
UCI stretched the game in the third quarter adding four more goals before the Lions converted a five-meter penalty shot and a powerplay goal to make it a 10-4 game.
Julie Swieca and Megan Falcon sealed the win for the 'Eaters notching one goal apiece in the fourth frame.
UCI returns tomorrow to play No. 2 Cal at 10:30 a.m. at Anteater Aquatics Center.
