October 10, 2018 | Men's Soccer
DAVIS, Calif. --- UC Irvine men's soccer entered hostile territory Wednesday afternoon in Aggie Soccer Field and erased a second-half deficit while turning away the No. 25 UC Davis attack to win, 2-1.
Fifth-year keeper Greg Patenaude was put to the test from the start stopping a shot in the first three minutes. He had four saves by halftime holding the scoring line at a 0-0 tie.
UC Davis (7-3-3, 0-2-1) turned on the scoring early following the halftime whistle as Adam Mickelson dropped a pass on the right post from the touchline perfectly hitting Kaleb Schirmacher who put a header home and the Aggies ahead, 1-0, in the 47th minute.
The Anteaters (9-4-1, 3-0-0) wouldn't let that linger long answering in the 52nd minute as Darren Hamilton and Jose Ortiz set up Lawrence Yamaguchi who slid onto the cross and finished to level things back up at 1-1.
The decisive strike came soon afterwards as Jose Ortiz gathered along the left wing and drove the touchline dribble through Aggie defenders and firing from a tough angle, but found some daylight slipping it under the bar and in to put UCI up, 2-1, in the 63rd minute.
The Anteaters then had to batten down the hatches for the remaining 27 minutes, and Greg Patenaude stood on his head making half of his 10 saves down the stretch in all different forms - challenging a 1v1, diving off a free kick attempt, and even denying one with his face. Patenaude even got an assist from Jose Soto on the backline recovering after Jacob Rudolph slipped one under Patenaude in the 73rd minute and sweeping it off the line to keep the one-goal advantage.
The final whistle sounded in a win for UC Irvine as it continues its charge to start Big West play securing all nine points in its first three matches.
Patenaude's 10 saves double his career high, and mark the first double-digit save effort since Michael Breslin's 11 in 2012. Overall, its the 15th match with 10 or more saves from an Anteater keeper. Including Soto's save off the backline, UCI had 11 saves in total. Patenaude's counterpart, Wallis Lapsley, had four saves of his own in addition to a save by his backline as well.
UCI's game-winner came courtesy of Jose Ortiz, third career game-winner, second of the season, and eighth goal of 2018 tying him once again of the conference lead. He also added his third assist on the season, his second match with a goal and assist this season and third streak of 2018 of three matches with a point. The equalizer from Yamaguchi is the first of his career, and it was assisted by Darren Hamilton joining Yamaguchi with his first Anteater point as well and first point on the Division I level.
