Anteaters Head to Malibu for Conference Challenge Cup

THIS WEEK
The 11th-ranked UC Irvine men's water polo team is back in action on Saturday, Sept. 9, when it heads to Malibu for a pair of games at the Conference Challenge Cup. The Anteaters will square off against No. 13 UC San Diego (11:30 a.m.) and No. 18 Loyola Marymount (5 p.m.) at Pepperdine's Raleigh Runnels Memorial Pool.
UCI and Pepperdine are representing the Golden Coast Conference, while UCSD and LMU are representing the Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) in the one-day tournament.
LAST TIME OUT
UC Irvine opened the 2017 campaign by going 2-2 at the Triton Invitational in La Jolla. On Saturday, Sept. 2, the 'Eaters toppled Fresno Pacific, 20-1, behind a team effort that saw 11 players find the back of the net. Senior Lovre Milos led the way with four goals, while freshmen Jack Baumgardner and Fynn Schuetze had three each.
UCI then suffered a heartbreaking 14-12 loss to No. 6 UC Santa Barbara. Senior Ryan Warde scored with 10 seconds remaining in regulation to send the game into overtime, but the Gauchos were able to pull away in the extra period. Milos once again had a team-high four goals.
On Sunday, the Anteaters dropped a 10-8 decision to ninth-ranked UC Davis, before concluding the tournament with a dominant 13-2 victory over then No. 12 UC San Diego.
THE OPPONENTS
Thirteenth-ranked UC San Diego hosted the Triton Invitational and went 1-3, with its lone win coming in the opener against Chapman. Connor Turnbow-Lindenstadt and Cooper Milton paced the offense with six and five goals, respectively. Goalkeeper Sam Thompson also finished with 42 saves on the weekend.
No. 18 Loyola Marymount went 2-2 at the Triton Invitational. The Lions dropped their first two games, falling to Cal, 16-1, and Fresno Pacific, 9-8. They bounced back on the second day, defeating Chapman (11-5) and Air Force (16-12).
NEWS AND NOTES
The 'Eaters moved up two spots in the Collegiate Water Polo Association rankings as they were tied for 11th in the latest poll released on Sept. 6.
UCI outscored its opponents, 53-27, at the Triton Invitational.
Senior Lovre Milos led UC Irvine in scoring in three of the four games last weekend. He finished with 13 goals, including a season-high four against Fresno Pacific, UC Santa Barbara and UC San Diego.
Senior goalkeeper Matej Matijevic started all four games at the Triton Invitational where he totaled 46 saves (11.5/gm). He has turned away at least 10 shots in each of the last three outings, and tied his career high with 18 saves against UC Santa Barbara.
Freshmen Fynn Schuetze and Jack Baumgardner each netted three goals in their collegiate debut. Schuetze, who had three multi-goal games last weekend, ranks second on the team with eight goals.
The Anteaters have one game next week as they are set to host Concordia in their home opener at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 15.
