No. 6 UC Irvine Rallies To Beat No. 7 Michigan At Wolverine Invite

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- In an early morning game at the Canham Natatorium, No. 6 UC Irvine rallied to defeat No. 7 Michigan 11-10 at the Wolverine Invitational.

In the fourth quarter, Julie Swieca scored a power play goal at 6:29 to knot the score at 9-9 then Kelsey Thornton put the Anteaters ahead for the first time, 10-9 at 5:29. Michigan would answer at 2:36 before Gabby Pierandozzi netted the game-winner at 1:20 for the 11-10 victory.

The seniors led UC Irvine with McKenna Mitchell posting a season-high four goals for the second consecutive game. Senior Kelsey Thornton added three goals, while seniors Gabby Pierandozzi, Mckenzie Milham and Cambria Shockley also added a goal. Junior Julie Swieca rounded out the scoring for UCI.

In goal, Jenna Phreaner recorded six saves, while Riley Shaw had four saves in the second half.

Michigan struck first, opening the game with the first two goals before McKenna Mitchell got UCI on the board at 3:28, 2-1. A Wolverine goal on a penalty shot was followed by a goal by Mackenzie Milham at 2:35. A goal on a power play by Michigan at 2:02 was followed a minute later by a goal by Cambria Shockley at 1:02, 4-3.

Kelsey Thornton would have UCI's lone goal of the second quarter (4:59) as the Anteaters would trail 6-4 at the half.

The Wolverines would build an 8-4 lead until Thornton scored again at 5:43 on a pass from Mitchell. Mitchell then took over the game scoring the next three goals, the last with 42 seconds remaining in the third quarter to narrow the gap to 9-8 heading in to the final quarter.

UCI will close out the tournament with a 9:40 p.m. PT game against Pacific.
