
Mary Brooks Leads No. 5 UC Irvine Past No. 8 Hawaii, 8-7

IRVINE, Calif. – Mary Brooks scored the game-winner with 54 seconds left as No. 5 UC Irvine beat No. 8 Hawaii in a Big West match at the Anteater Aquatics Center Friday night.
The Anteaters (14-6) out-scored Hawaii 2-1 in the final period, including Brooks' backhand with 54 ticks left to clinch the victory.
Brooks recorded three goals, while reigning Big West Player of the Week McKenna Mitchell and Cambria Shockley each had two goals. Mackenzie Milham also added a goal in the win.
In goal, Jenna Phreaner recorded 13 saves for the Anteaters.
UCI's Cambria Shockley got the scoring started with a goal at 5:37 in the first period. Hawaii returned the favor with a power play goal by Irene Gonzalez at 5:16. McKenna Mitchell put away a shot down low at 4:54 to give the Anteaters a 2-1 advantage. Mary Brooks had a soft tap in over a defender on a pass from Kelsey Thornton at 2:24. Gonzalez would score again for Hawaii at 2:02 to close out the period with UCI on top 3-2.
UH's Chloe Barr tied the game at 5:01. Mitchell would fire a backhand to push UCI back in front 4-3 at 4:38 before Barr scored again at 4:10. Mary Brooks scored at 3:46 to give UCI a 5-4 lead at the break.
Gonzalez (6:45) and Barr (4:35) scored consecutive goals to put the 'Bows ahead for the first time 6-5. McKenzie Milham fired a goal from the right side at 2:17 to knot the score at 6-6. UCI goalie Jenna Phreaner had two impressive saves, one off her face, in the last 30 seconds to keep the score even at the end of the third quarter.
A perfect pass from Thornton to Shockley gave UCI a 7-6 lead at 6:40. Claire Nixon scored at 6:09 to tie the score again at 7 all before Brooks ended the scoring with the winner, 8-7.
