PALO ALTO, Calif. – No. 6 UC Irvine could not hold on in the fourth quarter as No. 8 Hawaii won 9-8 in the first game of the Stanford Invitational at the Balardi Pool.
Junior Mary Brooks led UCI with four goals, including two in the first period to help the Anteaters to a 3-1 lead.
Gabby Pierandozzi scored one of her two goals in the second quarter as UCI held on to a 4-3 lead at the half. Hawaii scored four goals in the third to deadlock the contest at 7-7 heading in to the final period.
Senior Cambria Shockley scored at 4:17 to put UCI up 8-7, but that was the last of the scoring for UCI. Hawaii would score at the 3:43 mark and again with a man up at 1:20 to clinch the 9-8 victory.
UCI will continue tournament action at 4:30 p.m., battling Loyola Marymount.
