
No. 8 UC Irvine Topples No. 6 Michigan, 8-7 In OT

LA JOLLA, Calif. – Senior Kelsey Thornton scored the lone goal in overtime to lift No. 8 UC Irvine over No. 6 Michigan, 8-7 in the third place game of the Triton Invitational at Triton Pool Sunday.
Thornton matched her career-high with four goals, including the game-winner with 35 seconds remaining in the second overtime period.
Michigan would take a 5-3 lead in the third period before UCI rattled off four straight goals, two by Thornton and two by McKenna Mitchell to move in front 7-5 with 3:58 left in regulation. The Wolverines rallied with Maddy Steere scoring the final two in regulation, the last at 1:26, to force overtime. Neither team scored in the first three minute extra session before Thornton's winner in the second.
Mitchell ended with three goals, while junior Natalie Seidemann added one in the second quarter.
The Anteaters go 3-1 over the two-day tournament and improve to 7-3 on the year.
UCI will travel to UCLA Friday (Feb. 17) night for a 7:00 p.m. game in Los Angeles.
