The UC Irvine women's cross country team will make its way to Riverside for the third time this season as it is set for the 2017 Big West Championships on Saturday, Oct. 28.
UCI has seven athletes entered in the women's 6K race that gets underway at 8:30 a.m. on the UCR Ag/Ops Course. Keely Boyd, Brenda Dorantes, Amy Flores, Anastasia Karnaze, Olympia Martinez, Megan Mirkhanian and Jenessa Reyes will be competing for the Anteaters with the top five finishers counting toward team scoring.
"We know the course, this will be our third time racing at Riverside," UC Irvine distance coach Chris Evans said. "For the women, it will be about getting out and having trust in all the work they have put in throughout the season. They are ready to go out and compete."
BACK TO THE I.E.
This will mark the Anteaters' third race on the UCR Ag/Ops Course this year. They were also in the Inland Empire for the UC Riverside Invitational 6K (Sept. 16) and the Highlander Invitational 5K (Oct. 14). In addition, this is the sixth time in the last eight years the Big West Championships will be held in Riverside.
MEET REWIND
In 2016, the 'Eaters placed seventh at the Big West Championships on a windy Kahuku Golf Course in Hawaii. Anastasia Karnaze was the team's top finisher, covering 6000 meters in 23:27.5 (34th). Brenda Dorantes was also 46th with a time of 23:58.1. Cal Poly won the team title, while the Mustangs' Peyton Bilo took home the individual crown.
SOPHOMORE CORE
UC Irvine has a trio of sophomores who have been among the team's top five performers in every race this year. Anastasia Karnaze led the way in three of four meets, securing the No. 1 spot for UCI at the Pepperdine Invitational, UC Riverside Invitational and Master's University XC Invitational. Her best showing came in the season opener in Malibu where she took fourth overall.
Keely Boyd has come in either third or fourth for the 'Eaters on four occasions, while Brenda Dorantes has consistently been in the fourth and fifth spots. Most recently, Dorantes stepped up as the Anteaters' No. 2 runner, and Boyd established a lifetime-best 19:02.4, at the Highlander Invitational.
MAKING A STATEMENT
Senior Jenessa Reyes has made an immediate impact in her first cross country season at UC Irvine. At the Pepperdine Invitational, Reyes passed a couple Waves runners down the final stretch to give UCI a 26-29 victory over the host school. She also led the team at the Highlander Invitational with a 5K personal-record 18:30.8, while coming in second for the 'Eaters at the UC Riverside Invitational 6K (22:30.7) and the Master's University Invitational 5K (18:52.5). Reyes came to Irvine from Orange Coast College last year but only competed in outdoor track & field.
AND WE'RE OFF
In its most recent outing on Saturday, Oct. 14, UCI ran to 10th place at the Highlander Invitational. Jenessa Reyes was the Anteaters' top finisher, clocking in with a personal-record 18:30.8 over 5000 meters at the UCR Ag/Ops Course. Reyes, who shaved over 20 seconds off her previous best, was 41st overall. Brenda Dorantes came in 49th at 18:41.4, while Anastasia Karnaze was 59th (18:52.5). Keely Boyd added a lifetime-best 19:02.4 to place 69th.
The 'Eaters concluded the month of September with a runner-up performance at the Master's University XC Invitational in Santa Clarita. Karnaze led the way for the third time in as many races as she placed second among NCAA Division I athletes, and 13th overall, completing the 5K course in 18:13.1.
On Sept. 16, the Anteaters finished 14th against NCAA Division I teams at the UC Riverside Invitational 6K. Karnaze was 90th out of 220 overall competitors (21:59.2), and Reyes added a career-best 22:30.7.
UCI also went 4-1 at the season-opening Pepperdine Invitational (Sept. 1), defeating USC, Bakersfield, CSUN and Pepperdine, while falling to Long Beach State. Karnaze took fourth with a career-best 14:58.71 over 4000 meters.
