Anteaters Stall Against Cal State Fullerton, 3-1
October 18, 2017 | Men's Soccer
IRVINE, Calif. --- UC Irvine fell from its top spot in the Big West South falling, 3-1, Wednesday night to Cal State Fullerton in Anteater Stadium.
The shots didn't come early, instead there were three cards in the first 35 minutes in a match that featured 32 fouls. The first scoring came in the 32nd minute as Cal State Fullerton (8-6-2, 3-3-1) took advantage of a transition run. Samuel Goni was the beneficiary slotting home a feed from Diego Sanchez to give the Titans the 1-0 lead into the half.
UC Irvine (7-6-3, 2-3-2) charged back early in the second half with multiple chances on target from Giovanni Godoy, but CSF would add to their lead before the 'Eaters could strike.
Goni got it to go once again taking a high feed from midfield by Corentin Ohlmann. Goni fired on net, and with help from a deflection off the defender dipped it over Anteater keeper Alex Waldron and put the Titans ahead, 2-0.
The 'Eaters reeled the match back to one in the 68th minute. Mario Ortiz had some time to create, and ripped a shot from 35 yards over the keeper sneaking it under the bar to make it a 2-1 game.
As the 'Eaters searched for an equalizer, CSF denied them at each go, and held off enough until it could find an insurance goal, once again in transition, with Goni facilitating this time around dishing to a streaking Ross McPhie to make it 3-1 for good in the 83rd minute.
Paul-Andre Guerin made three stops on his end for the Titans, and was helped out by his backline on one occasion. Waldron stopped one shot, but the defense gave up three goals for a second straight match to dropping the Big West South standings to third.
Ortiz's goal pushes him to third on the club with four on the season now. The assist came from Ivan Canales, his fourth, adding to his point total at 18 and second on the club.
UC Irvine will host its final home match of the regular season next on Saturday, Oct. 21 squaring up with CSUN at 7:00 p.m.
