UC Irvine Upset by Cal Baptist, 9-8

IRVINE, Calif. --- Eighth-ranked UC Irvine saw its four-game winning streak snapped Wednesday night as the Anteaters were upset by No. 16 California Baptist, 9-8, in a non-conference game at the Anteater Aquatics Complex.
After UCI junior Ryan Warde tied the game at 8-8 on a power-play goal with 3:56 remaining in the fourth quarter, the Lancers' Teddy Forte hit the game-winning, extra-man goal with 3:24 left.
Warde and freshman Ian Fleenor led the 'Eaters (5-3) with three goals apiece while Bryant Joudrie and Foster Hoose added a goal each. Matej Matijevic registered 11 saves in goal.
Tanner Shore and Brent Teraoka led California Baptist (4-6) with a pair of goals apiece while Joseph Moorman had 15 saves, including five in the fourth quarter.
UCI led 3-2 at the end of the first quarter as Hoose scored with 12 seconds left in the period.
The game was tied 4-4 at halftime as the Lancers scored twice in the final 4:13 to pull even.
In the third quarter, UCI's Joudrie scored an extra-man goal with 6:10 left to tie the game at 5-5, Shore put California Baptist ahead 6-5 with 5:05 remaining and Warde knotted the game at 6-6 with 4:50 left. Dominick Nevarez put the Lancers ahead 7-6 at the 3:23 mark, Thomas Henline made it 8-6 with 2:56 remaining and Fleenor hit a power-play goal with 1:29 left to pull the 'Eaters within 8-7 entering the final quarter.
UCI competes in the Mountain Pacific Invitational this weekend, opening against Pepperdine Friday at 2:25 p.m. at Northgate High School in Walnut Creek.
