
UC Irvine Falls to No. 2 UCLA, 11-6

IRVINE, Calif. --- Sophomore Mary Brooks scored three goals, but ninth-ranked UC Irvine fell to No. 2 UCLA, 11-6, in a non-conference game at Anteater Aquatics Complex Friday night.
Gabby Pierandozzi opened the scoring for UCI with 5:56 left in the opening quarter to tie the game at 1-1.
Brooks converted a penalty shot to knot the score at 2-2 with 4:48 left in the first quarter, but the Bruins scored the next six goals, leading 6-2 after one quarter and 8-2 at halftime.
Brooks' second goal of the night with 5:12 remaining in the third made it 8-3 and Keana Eldridge followed at the 3:40 mark to pull the Anteaters within 8-4 entering the final quarter.
India Forster's goal with 5:36 left gave UCLA a 9-4 lead before goals by Corinna Toledo (4:41) and Brooks (2:24) drew UCI within 9-6.
The Bruins then scored the game's last two goals in the final 2:12 to improve to 8-1 on the season.
Brooks raised her team-leading total to 19 goals for the season. Jenna Phreaner made five stops in goal for the Anteaters, who fell to 6-5 on the year.
Five different UCLA players scored two goals each and Alex Musselman had eight saves in goal.
The Anteaters host the UC Irvine Invitational Feb. 27-28 at Anteater Aquatics Complex and Corona del Mar High School. UCI opens against Arizona State Feb. 27 at 9:15 a.m. in the Anteaters' pool.
