Anteaters Emerge from Slugfest with 1-1 Draw
September 11, 2015 | Men's Soccer
SAN DIEGO, Calif. --- Neither squad gave an inch in a double overtime thriller Friday night in Torero Stadium as a card-laden match fell victim to a 1-1 draw between men's soccer and USD.
All the scoring came in the first 10 minutes with UCI (1-2-1) getting it going. USD keeper Thomas Olsen's kick deflected to freshman Ivan Canales who took advantage and lifted one up and over the retreating Olsen to take a 1-0 lead 4:40 into the match.
San Diego (2-1-2) righted the ship in the ninth minute as a Djordje Babic corner kick landed in the back of the net thanks to a Keegan Smith header to tie the match at 1-1.
The remainder of the half came and went at that score while the second half had a little different feel.
USD blasted the first six shots of the half toward the 'Eaters cage while the squads exchanged cards along the way.
The match turned in the 76th minute when Torero defender Parker Price picked up his second card and the resulting red card left USD with 10 men.
Three and a half minutes was all it took until UCI received a red card of its own as freshman forward Luis Leon was the culprit leaving each squad a man down after 81 minutes.
The pressure continued to rise coming to a head in the 88th minute as Torrey DeArmas' strike was denied by Michael Breslin sending the match to overtime.
Extra time was full of excitement in its 20 minutes as three more cards were drawn and eight more shots were fired.
USD had a ball bounds inches wide in the first overtime while UCI marched down the field and Eduardo Calzada turned a header directly on Olsen.
The second overtime saw two spectacular saves from Breslin denying USD forward Marvin Schmiege each time leaving the match at 1-1 after 110 minutes.
"Tonight was a very hard fought game," Head Coach Chris Volk added. "I am pleased with the effort our players showed throughout the 110 minutes. We scored an early goal and created more quality chances than our previous three games."
In all, 33 shots, 20 fouls, 10 cards, and eight corners spelled out the story.
The goal for Canales was his first and first points of his Anteater career. Breslin stopped five shots in his eighth career draw moving him past Cameron Rossi for fourth all-time with 247. Two more saves will tie Andrew Fontein for third on the list.
"A tie on the road to an experienced team like USD is a result we can build on going forward."
Volk and the Anteaters will get a break from the road on Sunday as they return to Anteater Stadium for a 7:00 p.m. match with San Diego State.
