No. 5 Anteaters Pushed to the Brink by No. 12 SDSU

SAN DIEGO, Calif. --- No. 5 UC Irvine's visit to the Aztec Aquaplex Friday afternoon needed overtime Mary Brooks could deliver the game-winner to down No. 12 San Diego State, 5-4.
The Aztecs (6-7, 1-0) had their way in the early going scoring the match's first three goals before Destene Albers salvaged the half for UCI (9-5) with a strike in the final nine seconds to cut the deficit to 3-1 through 16 minutes.
The Anteaters slowly made their way back to take the lead with 5:12 left in the fourth thanks to Mary Brooks making it 4-3.
The 'Eater defense stood tall throughout the second half not allowing a goal for a 20-minute stretch before the Aztecs reeled UCI back in with a goal following a drawn penalty with 1:14 remaining.
The contest flew through and past the two overtime periods right into sudden victory. Jillian Yocum was up to the task making two immense saves early in the period. Aztec goalie Rachel Mitchell had a pair of saves of her own as part of her 15-save effort, but was unable to deny Brooks for a second time as the freshman ended it with 1:09 left in the sudden victory period to cement the 5-4 victory.
Yocum finished with eight saves of her own and three steals. Brooks was matched by SDSU's Ioli Benekou for top scorer with two each.
UCI is back home for its last home match until April as it hosts No. 3 USC on Sat. Feb. 28 at 1:00 p.m.
