Anteaters Hurdled by Hornets, 3-2, in Overtime
October 08, 2015 | Men's Soccer
SACRAMENTO, Calif. --- Sacramento State did just enough to hold men's soccer's offensive attack at bay and perhaps steal an overtime victory Thursday evening downing UCI 3-2.
John Quintanilla provided the dagger in the 93rd minute heading home the winner off a Christian Guzman cross to sew up the comeback for Sac State (4-6-1, 1-2-0).
The Hornets and keeper James Del Curto bent but did not break to UC Irvine (2-7-3, 0-2-1) who held leads in the eighth and 64th minutes only to see the Hornets answer in the ninth and 81st minutes to send the match to overtime.
Del Curto put up a monstrous effort in net with 14 saves as the 'Eaters put 16 of their 20 shots on frame. The total tied a program high set in August of 2012 when it used 16 shots on goal to defeat LIU Brooklyn.
The Anteater standouts figured to be Jaime Phillips and Mats Bjurman who together put up 10 shots, all on target, and the two scores for the 'Eaters.
Bjurman's was his first of the year putting the 'Eaters on top in the 64th minute redirecting home a free kick. Phillips provided the assist on that goal after her served up one of his own in the eighth minute extending his point streak to five straight matches.
Keeper Michael Breslin added five saves to run his season total to 51.
The 'Eaters remain winless in conference play, and will look to salvage their road trip on Saturday, Oct. 10 when they trip to UC Davis for a 1:00 p.m. match.
