September 15, 2013 | Men's Soccer
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. --- UC Irvine finished its Midwest road trip with a 1-1 tie against the defending champs Sunday afternoon at Armstrong Stadium.
Mats Bjurman provided the goal on the afternoon for UCI (3-1-2) as his free kick found a way past Indiana keeper Michael Soderlund in the 36th minute. Soderlund held firm for Indiana (2-3-1) stopping six shots on the day.
Bjurman's goal, the first of his Anteater career, tied up the match. The Hoosiers had opened the scoring in the eighth minute as a nifty flick up to Tommy Thompson put Indiana ahead.
UCI came through with a number of scoring opportunities. The 'Eaters attacked for four shots in the final minutes of the first half including a save on freshman Andy Mendoza with seconds remaining. Michael Sperber and Bryan Breslin combined for a pair of shots on goal midway through the second half, and regulation ended with and Anteater flurry as Lester Hayes III's shots clanged off the post. Thomas Janjigian's rebound attempt was stopped by a Hoosier defender to turn away the Anteater attack all within the last ten seconds.
UCI once again maintained the shot advantage as they've done in all six matches this season. The 'Eaters pelted Indiana for 16 shots to the Hoosiers' four. UCI has had a double-digit shot advantage in five of its six games now.
It also was considerably more physical drawing two yellow cards and a 27-13 foul differential.
Michael Breslin continued to lower is goals-against-average to 0.78 on the season stopping just one shot.
UCI returns home from its four-match road trip for a big test with No. 14 UCLA on Thurs. Sept. 19 in Anteater Stadium starting at 7:00 p.m.
