Anteaters Swept By Long Beach State

LONG BEACH, Calif. --- UC Irvine was unable to pick up points in the Black and Blue Rivalry series after being swept by Long Beach State, 25-18, 25-21, 25-15 Saturday at the Pyramid.
Allison Lee, making the start tonight for the Anteaters, hit .522, knocking down 13 of 23 attempts with just one error to go along with nine digs and an ace. Aly Squires led the team in digs with 11 while Shelley Anderson totaled 26 assists and eight digs.
UCI (11-11, 2-6 Big West) trailed by three twice early in the first set and the Anteaters tied the match twice before Long Beach State opened up its largest lead at 13-9 as Bre Mackie and Alex Reid sandwiched a 49er block with a pair of kills. After an Anteater timeout, LBSU added two more points before Squires dropped in a shot from the back row cut the lead to five (15-10). An unforced error by Long Beach State closed the gap to four at 19-15 and that would be all for the Anteaters as the 49ers took set point on a service error by Lee and closed the frame on a service error by Fleming.
The 49ers jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the second but UCI capitalized on an unforced error with an ace from Fleming as the Anteaters came to within one at 4-3. However, LBSU went on a 6-1 run to force a UCI timeout at 10-4. The team answered by chipping at the lead and trailing 20-15, mounted a 5-0 run to shave the deficit to one at 20-19 as Lee delivered on back-to-back kills. Hampton and Reid halted UCI's run with a block on a Fleming attempt and Delaney Aigner-Swesey hit a cross-court kill for the 23-20 lead. Anderson went to Fleming again on the slide for a point but Hampton threw the ball down past the Anteater block and Mackie connected with Erin Juley to give the 49ers a 2-0 lead.
Mirroring the third frame, LBSU took a 4-1 lead and this time increased the game tempo to open a 10-point cushion at 13-3 before Squires would briefly halt the run with a kill off the LBSU hands. The Anteaters battled but were unable to make a significant dent in LBSU's lead, and following a UCI serving error, the 49ers closed out the set with a solo block from Reid.
