
Pickrell, Manz Post Career-Highs To Lead UC Irvine To Comeback Win Over UC Davis

Irvine, Calif. – UCI battled back after dropping the first two sets to beat UC Davis, 3-2 (22-25, 18-25, 25-16, 25-17, 15-9) at the Bren Center Saturday.
After hitting just .140 in the first two sets, the UCI offense ignited, hitting .427 (38-3-82) in the final three games.
Freshman Cassidy Pickrell tied her career-high with 17 kills and set a new career-best with six blocks and nine digs to lead the Anteaters who go to 12-13 overall and 3-8 in the Big West.
Middle blocker Arielle Manz recorded her own career record with nine block assists to go with six kills and four service aces.
Outside hitter Marisa Bubica came off the bench to play for the first time since Oct. 19 and added 11 kills. Middle blocker Shannon Fleming recorded nine kills, while outside hitters Allison Lee and Aly Squires each chipped in seven kills each. Squires also totaled 10 digs and three blocks. Libero Arden Davis recorded a team-high 18 digs, while Hannah Nabbout had 13 and Molly Yoder tallied 11 digs. Setter Shelley Anderson posted 50 set assists, two aces and six digs in the victory.
UC Davis (14-11, 6-6) was led by Valerie Brain and Devon Damelio with 14 kills apiece. Mary Schroeder had 12 kills followed by Victoria Lee with 10 kills. Jenny Woolway recorded 47 set assists and a match-best 19 digs.
The Anteaters held a 13-4 blocking advantage and fired eight aces to the Aggies' six. UCI out-hit (.253-.161) UCD, but the Aggie had more digs (77-75).
In the first set, UC Davis held an early 7-5 lead before UCI scored six straight points, two on block assists by Arielle Manz, to take the 11-7 advantage. The Aggies would score four unanswered to pull within 14-13, but a kill by Aly Squires was followed by a Davis attack error to extend the margin to 16-13. UCI would hold a 20-15 advantage before the Aggies caught fire and out-scored UCI 10-2 to win the set 25-22. Valerie Brian had three kills in the final spurt, while a service ace by Kendall Frisoli end the game.
UC Davis went on a 5-0 run in the second set to go ahead 9-5. The Aggies would score six in a row, three coming on Anteater errors, to lead 19-10. The Anteaters rallied with kills by Marisa Bubica and Lee plus two aces by Manz to narrow the deficit to 20-17, but a service error followed ending the streak. A pair of UCI attack errors gave UC Davis the set 25-18.
A kill by Bubica and an ace by Pickrell gave the Anteaters the 2-0 lead to start the third set and the Anteaters would take a 7-3 lead with the help of kills by Shannon Fleming, Shelley Anderson and Bubica. UCI would use a 7-2 run to go up 16-8. Allie Wegener had back-to-back aces to get UC Davis within 20-13, but the Anteaters would score three of the next four points for the 21-14 advantage. UCI would go on to take the set 25-16. Pickrell had five kills while Bubica recorded four kills to pace UCI in the set.
UCI held an early 12-7 lead, but Davis would close to 13-12 on a kill by Devon Dameilo. A kill by Bubica, two aces by Manz followed by a kill by Fleming moved the advantage back to 17-12. The Anteaters would score the last three points on a block by Manz and Pickrell, an ace by Anderson and a kill by Pickrell to win, 25-17 and force a fifth set.
UCI jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the final set but the Aggies were able to knot the score at 5-5 on a kill by Brain. Consecutive kills by Fleming gave the Anteaters a 9-6 advantage. UCI led 12-9 before a kill by Pickrell, a block by Manz and Squires and a kill by Bubica finished the match 15-9.
UCI will travel to UC Riverside Thursday (Nov. 14) for a 7:00 p.m. match.
