
Trio of Firsts for UC Irvine at Big West Challenge

FULLERTON, Calif. --- Two individuals and a relay earned first-place finishes in the Big West Challenge at Cal State Fullerton Sunday.
Amber Middleton won the 100-meter hurdles in 13.71, just .04 off the school record.
Erika Nowell captured first in the 400 meters in 55.86, which is the seventh-fastest time in Anteater history.
Another victory was earned by UCI's 4x400 relay of KayC Wharton, Middleton, Kelly Collins and Nowell in 3:45.33.
The 4x100 relay of Middleton, Sanmisola George, Martina Mickos and Breeanca Fleming placed second in 46.77.
Itos Aikhionbare picked up a pair of second-place finishes in the shot put (45-7 ¾) and discus throw (143-1).
Collins finished second in the 400-meter hurdles in 62.87 and Wharton was fourth in 62.97.
George was third in the 100 meters (12.18) and fourth in the 200 meters (25.06).
Sakia Sailinuu (2:14.16) and Chelsea Schneider (2:15.65) were third and fourth in the 800 meters while Samia Sailinuu placed fourth in the 1500 meters (4:38.74).
UCI finished third in the team competition as UC Santa Barbara won the title.
Some Anteater student-athletes will compete at the Mt. SAC Relays next weekend while most of the team will be at the Long Beach Invitational Saturday.
