Smith Tops Big West for Second Time

IRVINE, Calif. --- Kristina Smith (Laguna Niguel / Dana Hills HS) has shot to the top of the Big West with her second Athlete of the Week award in the last three weeks.
Kristina Smith seems to get better as the match goes on. To open Big West play, she and partner Franziska Goettsching were perfect in their two doubles matches; part of a 6-0 run in doubles for UCI over the weekend and a string of seven wins in the duo's last eight matches.
In singles play, she put out identical performances against UCSB and Cal Poly with a 6-3 win in set one followed by a dominant display in set two with 6-0 wins. Smith is riding a four-match winning streak in singles; three wins coming with a 6-0 second set while the fourth was over a ranked opponent. Her overall record stands at 7-4, three losses to ranked opponents, and 4-1 as the No. 1, with that loss also coming to a ranked opponent.
For Smith, it is her second award of the year and third all-time. The 'Eaters now have two on the season after not receiving any in 2011. UCI overall has 38 AOTW awards as a program.
The 'Eaters defeated Furman, 4-3, on Wednesday as they prepare for an undefeated Big West clash at the Long Beach State 49ers Friday, March 9th at 2:00 p.m.
