November 21, 2011 | Men's Soccer
IRVINE, Calif. --- Thirty-seven of the nation's top men's college soccer players have been named finalists for the Soccer News Net College Boot award, recognizing the men's college player of the year.
The editors of each of the six sites in the Soccer News Net network nominated up to six local players for the award, each of which will be eligible for the regional player of the year award. The nominations included athletes playing at colleges within each site's coverage area, as well as athletes from the area playing collegiately elsewhere in the country. Nine additional at-large selections rounded out the nominations.
Fans from across the country will be able to vote for the top collegiate player. Voting will began on Friday, November 18 and continues until December 23, and will be conducted on LA Soccer News (lasoccernews.com).
Online fan voting will account for 40% of the total toward the award. The remaining 60% of the vote will be cast by the editorial staffs of the six web sites.
Ibarra is the fifth different Anteater and the third in as many years to be named Big West Offensive Player of the Year. He went into the postseason tied for second in the Big West in points (24), and for third in goals (8) and assists (8). Ibarra also shared the conference lead with four others for most game-winning goals (4). He clinched the Big West regular season title for the Anteaters with his strike in a 1-0 win at Cal Poly on Nov. 1. Ibarra then garnered Big West Tournament Most Valuable Player recognition when he scored in the 105th minute to lead UCI to a 3-2 double overtime victory over UC Santa Barbara and the program's third tournament title in four seasons.
