UC Irvine Downed by UC Santa Barbara, 9-6, at SoCal Tournament

LOS ALAMITOS, Calif. --- UC Irvine fell to UC Santa Barbara, 9-6, in the fifth-place game of the SoCal Tournament at the Joint Forces Training Base in Los Alamitos Sunday.
Mitch Wise and Jacob Mourer scored two goals apiece for the 'Eaters, who went 2-2 in the two-day tourney and are 10-6 on the season.
A power-play goal by Wise with 2:33 left in the second quarter gave UCI a 4-3 lead but UCSB's Eric Van de Mortel scored twice in the last 1:24 of the period to give the Gauchos a 5-4 lead at halftime.
UCSB went up 7-4 midway through the third quarter before UCI's Sam Figueroa converted a penalty shot with 2:03 left in the period to cut the deficit to 7-5.
Van de Mortel scored with 1:24 remaining in the third to give UCSB an 8-5 lead, then Mourer hit a power-play goal with 50 seconds left in the quarter for UCI's final goal of the game.
The 'Eaters compete in the Convergence Tournament Saturday, facing Whittier at 11:40 a.m. and Occidental at 3:40 p.m. in games at Las Flores Park in La Verne.
