UC Irvine Men Dedicated Three Boats on February 4, 2007

Newport, Calif. - The Irvine Men dedicated three boats at Alumni Day on February 4th. Over 40 alumni attended the event dedicating boats to John Walker, Jan Fiesel, and Roger James. All three have contributed to the success and spirit of the Irvine Rowing Program.

John Walker

  • 4-year rower at UC Irvine 1971,72,73,74; post collegiate racing in sweep and sculling events.
  • Contributions to UCI Crew and service to the rowing community include 25+ years as a Referee for collegiate, national and international competitions. In addition to officiating at over 300 races, John is one of 21 FISA-certified officials in the US and has been a Referee at over a dozen international events including the 2000 Olympics in Sydney and the upcoming 2007 Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro.
  • Served with t he Steering Committee of the UCI Rowing Alumni organization; Served as Course Manager at the Rowing venue for the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles; is active with international organizations to develop rowing worldwide.

Jan Fiesel

  • In recognition and great appreciation of her decades long contributions to the UCI Crew program and assistance to founder Duvall Hecht.
  • Jan provided indispensable logistic and administrative support for the operations of the UCI crew including team travel, home race referees and permits, coaches and administrator meetings and detailed correspondence with around the clock availability.
  • She facilitated alumni outreach, creating the alumni data base and acted as the contact coordinator for news, questions and events. She performed extensive follow through helping the alumni program to gain the momentum that carries through to this day.
  • Jan's tireless interest and attention to detail led to many on-water and off-water successes of the program, in general, and of many individual athletes, in particular. Sadly, Jan passed way this last year. While no longer with us, Jan's enthusiasm for crew and sacrifices for its members will always be remembered and is recognized with this naming.

Roger James

  • 4-year rower at UCI 1968,69,71,71; leader of crews that helped establish the traditions and recognition of UCI in rowing with wins over Cal, UCLA and Long Beach.
  • Roger was the quintessential student-athlete, rowing in the varsity boat his junior year; team leader his senior year; and accepted to law school upon graduation.
  • Sadly, he was diagnosed with leukemia early in his senior year. He informed Coach Ernst but requested that the crew not be told. During his last year of life and rowing, his disease limited him physically but not in his spirit which he generously shared with his crewmates. After Roger's death in 1971, the varsity racing eight was named in his honor. This naming continues our recognition of the spirit of Roger James and his crewmates.
