Anderson Breaks School Record in First Heptathlon

AZUSA, Calif. - Freshman Joy Anderson broke a 17-year-old school record in the heptathlon Friday at the Bryan Clay Multis.
 
Anderson concluded her first heptathlon with a program-best 5,572 points. She topped the previous standard of 5,549 that was set by UCI Athletics Hall of Fame inductee Lauren Collins in 2009. Anderson's point total ranks among the top-10 in the nation this season.
 
Anderson started the second day of action at Cougar Athletic Stadium with a season-best 5.28 meters (17-4) in the long jump. She then had a toss of 32.93m (108-0) in the javelin, before closing out the day with the second-fastest 800m time in Group A at 2:12.16.
 
Senior Jazzmine Davis finished fourth in Group B with a personal-best 5,415 points, which is fourth in school history. On Friday, Davis established a season-best 5.70m (18-8.5) in the long jump and a lifetime-best 2:22.74 in the 800m. She also had a strong outing in the javelin with a distance of 34.44m (113-0).
 
Senior Zharia Taylor cracked the Anteaters' top-10 with 5,185 points in her first heptathlon at UC Irvine. Taylor finished the long jump with a best of 5.57m (18-3.25). She then notched a personal-record 32.92m (108-0) in the javelin, and wrapped up the meet with a time of 2:28.77 in the 800m.
 
Senior Jolie Robinson had a solid start to Day 2, leading the 'Eaters in both the long jump and javelin. In the long jump, Robinson recorded a best of 5.76m (18-10.75), before finishing first in Group A with a toss of 42.80m (140-5) in the javelin. The two-time Big West heptathlon champion was then unable to finish the 800m, concluding the meet with 4,748 points.
 
After the Anteaters wrap up the Challenge Cup in Fullerton tonight, they will be back in action with four local meets next week. UC Irvine is slated to compete in the Mt. SAC Relays (April 15-18), Bryan Clay Invitational (April 16-18), Pacific Coast Invitational (April 16), and Beach Invitational (April 17-18).
