'Eaters Tumble to 5-4 Loss vs. CSUN

IRVINE, Calif. --- UC Irvine baseball fell in its Big West opener Friday night in Anteater Ballpark letting a late lead by to CSUN in a 5-4 defeat.
  • Starters Trevor Hansen and Traig Oughton were in command early carving up the hitters in a 0-0 game through four innings
    • Each team managed just one baserunner through the first two innings with a two-out walk for the 'Eaters in the first and a two-out single by CSUN in the second
    • Hansen worked a strikeout into every full inning he pitched including a pair in the second, fourth, and sixth innings including the final two outs in the fourth to strand a one-out double
    • Oughton had the UCI hitters on their heels hitless through three innings and inducing a pair of double play balls
  • UCI figured him out with a run-filled fifth inning
    • Singles by Tommy Farmer and James Castagnola started the frame, and then Zach Doyle's sacrifice bunt hugged the line to load the bases for a single
    • Efren Ortega battled to hit a fly ball to score the opening run a lead 1-0 on a sacrifice fly
    • Frankie Carney followed with a shot through the right side to drive in a second run, but he was thrown out trying to advance which cut down the rally
  • The Anteaters continued to add onto their lead
    • Alonso Reyes singled to start the sixth inning, and following a productive out, he came around to score on Auggie Gutierrez's single to go up 3-0
    • The Anteaters loaded the bases again with nobody out in the seventh and got a Reyes sacrifice fly to make it 4-0, UC Irvine
  • Hansen pitched into the eighth inning allowing a double and a flyout before departing for Ryder Brooks
    • CSUN slipped a single through the middle to plate the baserunner and get on the board trailing 4-1
    • A flyout and a walk made it two outs and ended the night for Brooks making way for Hunter Manning
    • He had a tough test with power hitter Matthew Thomas coming up, but induced the high fly ball to the outfield
    • Frankie Carney was unable to come up with the catch allowing both baserunners to score and extend the inning, now leading just 4-3
    • The next pitch was shot into the gap for a double to bring home the trying run, 4-4
  • CSUN got a leadoff single in the ninth followed by a sacrifice bunt and another single scoring the go-ahead run, 5-4

  • The loss drops UCI to 8-6 now on a three-game losing streak
  • The offense managed to out-hit CSUN, 9-8, with two-hit nights by Alonso Reyes and James Castagnola
    • Reyes and Ortega were the lone Anteaters with a run scored and RBI each
  • Hansen's marvelous night finished in a no-decision with one run charged to him over 7.1 innings and exactly 100 pitches
    • His 10 strikeouts marked the fourth career game with 10 or more and second this season
    • Hunter Manning drew the loss, the first of his career, with just one earned run to his name while three of the four outs he recorded were strikeouts
