No. 9 Anteaters Cruise Past No. 25 Matadors in 16-9 Big West Win

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - No. 9 UC Irvine women's water polo team defeated CSUN, 16-9, in a Big West match up on Thursday afternoon at Matador Pool. 

The 'Eaters went on a 5-0 run to open the first frame and build an early lead. The Matadors got one back before the horn to leave UCI up, 5-1, at the end of one. Each team added two in the second period to leave the Anteaters up 7-3 at the end of the half. UCI outscored CSUN 6-3 in the third period to increase their advantage, 13-6, at the end of the third. Each squad netted three in the fourth frame to seal the Anteaters victory, 16-9. 

BY THE NUMBERS: Junior Vivian Bailey and Freshman Sydney Hagan led the 'Eaters with three goals each. 

Sara Naulty, Hollis Munchoff, Jess Reagan, and Michelle Urkov each netted two. Madi O'Hara and Deirdre Murphy each added a tally. Junior Ella Walker recorded 10 saves in net. 

Mira Dravucz and Sophia Cooper led the Matadors with two goals. 

HOW IT HAPPENED: The 'Eaters went on a 5-0 run to open up the first frame, kicked off by a goal from Vivian Bailey, with an assist from Mary Hassett, at the 7:31 mark. Bailey went back-to-back and netted another, this time with help from Pippa Heaver, on the power play at the 5:32 mark. Sara Naulty found the back of the net at the 4:23 mark to increase the advantage, 3-0. Naulty netted her second in a row, with an assist from Bella Calderon, on the man advantage at the 3:05 mark. Sydney Hagan found the back of the net on the power play at the 1:31 mark to increase the 'Eaters lead to 5-0. The Matadors got one back at the 1:15 mark to leave UCI up, 5-1, at the end of one. 

The Matadors struck first in the second quarter (7:34) before Madi O'Hara found the back of the net, with help from Lauren Hett, to maintain the advantage, 6-2, at the 2:48 mark. Michelle Urkov netted one at the 2:01 mark to increase UCI's lead, 7-2. CSUN netted the final goal of the half at the 1:21 mark to leave the 'Eaters up 7-3 at the horn. 

CSUN capitalized on a penalty shot at the 7:21 mark, cutting the Anteaters lead to 7-4. Urkov netted one on the man advantage (6:52) before Hagan found the back of the net, with an assist from Urkov at the 6:14 mark. Hagan went back-to-back and netted another on the power play, (5:25) boosting UCI's lead to 10-4. The Matadors found the back of the net (4:30) before Jess Regan scored at the 2:28 mark to maintain the advantage, 11-5. Bailey netted her third of the game, with an assist from Urkov, at the 1:01 mark to increase the lead, 12-5. The Matadors capitalized on a penalty shot (0:44) before Reagan netted the final goal of the period (0:06), with help from Chloe Patist, to increase the 'Eaters lead, 13-6, at the end of three. 

The Matadors added a tally (6:47) before Hollis Munchoff found the back of the net, with help from Madeline Kasper, at the 6:12 mark. Munchoff went back-to-back and scored again at the 5:47 mark to increase UCI's lead, 15-7. The Matadors netted two in a row (2:03, 1:36) to cut the advantage, 15-9. Deirdre Murphy netted the last goal of the game (0:41), with an assist from Marisol Cowles, to seal the 'Eaters victory, 16-9. 

UP NEXT: The 'Eaters travel to No. 8 Long Beach State for a Big West match and their final game of the regular season on April 2 at 7 p.m.
