IRVINE, Calif. - No. 11 UC Irvine women's water polo team defeated No. 19 UC Santa Barbara, 17-3, in the first game of the Triton Invitational in La Jolla on Friday night.
The 'Eaters jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first quarter and never looked back. The Gauchos got one back before UCI netted two more to take a 4-1 lead at the end of the first. The Anteaters went on a 5-0 run to start the second period and jumped out to a 9-1 lead. UCSB found the back of the net before the 'Eaters scored one more to take a 10-2 lead at the end of the half. UC Irvine went on another 5-0 spurt to open up the third quarter and widen the gap, 15-2. The Gauchos got one back before the horn to make it 15-3 heading into the final frame. The Anteaters netted two in the fourth to seal the victory, 17-3.Â
BY THE NUMBERS: Junior Lauren Hett led the squad with five goals.Â
Pippa Heaver, Hollis Munchoff, Deirdre Murphy, and Michelle Urkov each netted two goals. Sara Naulty, Mary Hassett, Madi O'Hara, and Annabelle Mundelius each added a tally.Â

HOW IT HAPPENED: Pippa Heaver opened up the scoring before Lauren Hett found the back of the net to give UCI a 2-0 lead. The Gauchos got one back before Hett and Heaver each tacked on another tally to take a 4-1 lead at the horn.Â
Mary Hassett netted one before Sara Naulty tacked on a goal to increase the Anteaters lead, 6-1. Michelle Urkov found the back of the net before Hett secured the hat trick and Annabelle Mundelius added a tally to widen the gap, 9-1. The Gauchos found the back of the net before Urkov netted her second of the period to leave the 'Eaters up, 10-2, at the half.Â
Madi O'Hara got on the board for the 'Eaters before Hett netted back-to-back goals to increase the lead, 13-2. Deirdre Murphy and Hollis Munchoff got in on the scoring to add to the 'Eaters lead, 15-2. UCSB got one back before the horn to end the third, 15-3.Â
Murphy and Munchoff each added a goal in the fourth quarter to seal the Anteaters victory, 17-3.Â
