No. 7 UC Irvine Beats No. 18 Princeton, 3-0 In Home Opener

IRVINE, Calif. – No. 7 UC Irvine used a balanced offensive attack in a 3-0 sweep (25-17, 25-19, 25-10) of No. 18 Princeton in the Anteaters' home opener at the Bren Events Center Wednesday.

UCI improves to 4-0, taking 12 consecutive sets to start the year.

Outside hitter Andrej Jokanovic and middle blocker Trevor Clark led UCI with nine kills each, a career-best for Clark. Clark also had a match-high four block assists.

UCI, the nation's leader in opponent's hitting percentage, held the Tigers to a .059 (22-18-68) mark.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
>Middle blocker Micah Goss hit .778 with seven kills on nine swings without an error. The sophomore also added two block assists and three digs
>Redshirt freshman Cameron Kosty put-away a career-high six kills, 12 set assists, two digs and two block assists
>Outside hitter Andreas Brinck totaled a career-high four kills and two aces
>Outside hitter William D'Arcy hit .600 with three kills in five attempts plus recorded two block assists
>Setter Micah Tumas made the start and totaled a career-high 15 set assists, three kills, three digs and two aces
>Princeton (0-1) was led by Owen Mellon's match-high 10 kills
>The Tigers out-blocked UCI 7.0 to 6.5
>UCI hit .400 (41-11-75) and totaled service aces

FIRST SET
>A kill by Andrej Jokanovic off the block, a kill by Cameron Kosty on an overpass and a service ace by Micah Tumas moved UCI out to a 4-2 lead
>UCI scored four in a row, which included a kill by Micah Goss and three Princeton errors, one a triple block by Trevor Clark, Andon Kiriakou and Kosty, 9-5
>Andreas Brinck dropped it in for his first career ace, 21-14
>Goss and Kosty blocked a ball straight down for the set-winner, 25-17
>Clark continued his errorless streak, hitting 4-0-5 (.800)

SECOND SET
>Princeton committed four straight errors, the last one an ace by Tumas, put the Anteaters ahead 5-2
>Three UCI errors, the last a Tiger block, tied the set at 6-6
>Princeton led 12-11 before UCI had a kill by Jokanovic, a Tiger attack error and an ace by Clark to move ahead 14-12
>A Clark kill was followed by two Tiger attack errors, the last courtesy of a William D'Arcy solo block, 22-16
>A Princeton service error ended the set, 25-19

THIRD SET
>UCI jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead that was highlighted by Tumas took an overpass and deposited in the back corner, a slam by Goss in the middle and a Jokanovic kill off a long Kosty set from beyond the service line
>Three consecutive kills, one by Kosty and two by Brinck made it 9-2
>A 7-1 spurt, including a kill by D'Arcy and an ace by Brinck extended the lead to 18-5
>An ace by Kosty ended the match, 25-10

NOTES
>Through the first four matches of the season, UCI has out-aced its opponents 32-1
>The Anteaters had 41 kills on 75 attempts, both season-highs
