IRVINE, Calif. --- UC Irvine men's soccer saw their winning streak end while staying unbeaten following a 1-1 draw Friday night in Anteater Stadium against the University of New Hampshire.
Making It Count
Making It Count
- The first half was the definition of a chess match between two sides trying to build but not giving an inch
- The first shot didn't come until the 16th minute, and it came from the penalty spot
- The first offense anyone earned came just prior in the form of a UCI corner kick. The entrance fell high of the herd, but a foul from the Wildcats put the 'Eaters on the penalty spot
- Misael Gonzalez Lopez got the chance and put it home with ease for a 1-0 lead
- The rest of the offense on the stat sheet in the first half went to New Hampshire putting up a pair of shots and one from the sideline that Joe O'Shaughnessy gathered
- UC Irvine was whistled for 10 of the 14 total fouls in the period with a pair of cautions issued
- The second half had an eerily familiar start with offenses applying some more pressure, but nothing to show for it outside some Anteater corner kicks
- New Hampshire brought it up the field and reversed the Anteaters' fortune with a goal on their first and only shot of the half
- A ball swung in from the wing that the Anteaters cleared back out, but right onto Elias Khodri who volleyed it out of the air from 25 yards out perfectly returning it into the upper right of the goal with no hope of stopping it to knot the match up, 1-1, in the 56th minute
- The Anteaters were on the move looking to regain the lead firing a flurry of shots in response with most of the them blocked outside of a perfect cross to Travis Babineau who turned it on frame right into the arms of UNH keeper Claudio Fuentealba
- Each side made advances without much to show until Brady Treinen turned a shot toward goal in the 89th minute on a low half-volley that hovered over the ground across goal and sliding just wide of the far post to lock in the 1-1 draw
- When all was said and done, there were 12 shots between the sides and UCI finishing with the advantage, 9-3, turning three on goal
- In addition they earned seven corner kicks to three and 63% of the possession
- Misael Gonzalez Lopez built on his Big West Offensive Player of the Week honor with another goal, his fourth in the last three matches with at least one goal in each
- Joe O'Shaughnessy saw his first goal go by on the year, to no fault of his own, while saving one shot. The season-opening shutout streak finished at 325:05
- UCI remains unbeaten at 3-0-1 while New Hampshire stays winless at 0-3-2. The Wildcats keep the advantage in the all-time series at 1-0-1
