Anteaters Drop Match at UNLV

LAS VEGAS, Nev. --- UC Irvine men's soccer concluded their non-conference slate at Peter Johann Memorial Field falling, 2-0, to UNLV Friday night.

- The first half was a chess match for the most part with the 'Eaters earning a majority of the chances.
- Gage Lyons had a pair of shots in the first 20 minutes including a shot from the right wing after he found space that was lifted just high
- No other real threats showed up down the final half of the first 45 minutes until UNLV struck in the 42nd
- A centering pass hit Bryce Allard who turned and broke towards goal before looking up and firing from 25 yards out and dotting the upper right corner for a late-half goal and 1-0 lead
- As the second half began, Joe O'Shaughnessy was there to make the first save for either side a couple minutes in
- The programs traded barbs through the first 15 minutes including consecutive tries blocked by Marcus Lee and Brady Treinen in the 59th and 60th minutes
- UNLV got another prime chance in the 69th minute
- After a corner kick was cleared, the Rebels gathered it along the right wing whipping a low cross onto Ben Martin whose header turned on frame whizzing by O'Shaughnessy's ear for a 2-0 lead
- UC Irvine went on the attack looking to cut into the deficit.
- Shane Kaemerle and Misael Gonzalez Lopez put shots on frame
- Seven shots went up in the final 20 minutes with six attempted by the Anteaters
- UNLV's only additional shot was snagged by O'Shaughnessy on its way to the upper left corner in the 76th minute
- The loss drops UCI to 5-3-1 in the non-conference portion of its schedule finishing with three consecutive road losses
- UCI collected two saves with one credited to O'Shaughnessy
- Once again, the 'Eaters looked better on the stat sheet with 13 shots to UNLV's six along with four of the five total corner kicks
- UCI was also called for 14 fouls compared to five for UNLV, and four of the six offside calls went against UC Irvine
- Notable in the match was Justin Conyers making his first career start after 21 career matches for the fourth-year Anteater
