Several Career-Highs Not Enough To Beat Vanderbilt

Box Score NASHVILLE, Calif. – Several UC Irvine players recorded career-highs in a four-set loss to Vanderbilt at Memorial Gymnasium Friday night.

With three starters missing, UC Irvine (4-7) used a total team effort in a 24-26, 22-25, 26-24, 20-25 loss.

Sophomore Lois Hansen led UCI with a career-best 14 kills followed by freshman Lillian Lansing with a career-best 12 kills and 15 digs.

HEAD COACH ASHLIE HAIN SAID:
"I'm really proud of our play tonight. A lot of freshmen and underclassmen stepped up in one of the best volleyball venues I've ever played in. We had so much fun and will learn and grow from this experience"

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
>Middle blocker Sydnee Rowe hit .667 (7-1-9) with a career-high seven kills and four block assists  
>Setter Nicole Feliciano had a season-high 19 digs to go with 19 set assists and three kills
>Senior Kendra Duffey had a career-high five block assists plus six kills
>Middle blocker Abby Pekrul had career-bests in kills and blocks with three in each category
>Freshman Izzy Romero had a career-high six digs as well as a kill and an ace
>Libero Campbell Jensen posted 16 digs and eight set assists
>Setter Angelina Dellutri totaled 13 set assists, nine digs, a kill and an ace
>Outside hitter Emma Napoleon had an ace and two digs
>Vanderbilt (4-5) topped UCI in hitting percentage (.312-.193) and aces, but the Anteaters led in digs, 69-63. Both teams registered seven blocks
>Three Commodores had double-digit kills led by Kamryn Chaney's 19

FIRST SET
>Vanderbilt scored five straight, including two aces to lead early, 6-1
>Down 3-9 UCI rallied on kills by Izzy Romero, an ace by Emma Napoleon and kills from Lillian Lansing and Kendra Duffey to close to 7-10
>Block assist by Duffey and Sydnee Row drew the Anteaters within 16-18
>A 6-1 run that used a block by Duffey and Rowe and four Hansen kills to give the Anteaters a 21-20 lead
>The teams would battle back-and-forth until a pair of Vanderbilt kills ended the set, 26-24

SECOND SET
>Vanderbilt would again start quickly 5-2 before UCI had a kill by Lansing and two Commodore errors, 4-5
>A kill by Lansing kept it close 8-9
>Back-to-back kills by Vanderbilt created some separation 12-9
>Two Vandy errors helped UCI narrow the gap 13-15
>Vanderbilt would answer with the next three to open an 18-13 lead
>A Commodore service error and a kill by Rowe in the middle made it 15-18
>Five straight by the Anteaters with two kills by Rowe, one by Lansing and a block by Duffey and Rowe
>Vandy responded with the next three to get to set point, 24-21
>Following a service error and Commodore kill ended the set, 25-21

THIRD SET
>Kills from Abby Pekrul, Rowe and Lansing gave UCI the 7-4 lead
>Vanderbilt would take advantage of three UCI miscues to knot the score at 8-8
>Another kill and block assist by Pekrul plus a kill by Nicole Feliciano gave UCI the 14-11 advantage
>A kill by Duffey and a block by Duffey and Rowe extended the lead, 18-15
>Three kills and a solo block by Vanderbilt would flip the script and put the 'Dores in front 20-19
>UCI responded with the next three, a kill by Hansen, setting error and an ace by Angelina Dellutri, 22-20
>The Anteaters would hold match point on a kill by Hansen and a Vandy attack error only to watch the Commodores score the next three to tie the set at 24s
>A kill by Lansing was followed by a Vanderbilt setting error to give UCI the 26-24 victory

FOURTH SET
>Vanderbilt was up 3-1 before the Anteaters tied it at 4-4 on a kill by Feliciano
>Vanderbilt led 7-11 before the Anteaters went on a 5-1 run which was capped by a block assist by Duffey and Pekrul, 12-12
>Vanderbilt would hold a 20-16 lead, but UCI used three Vandy errors and an ace by Lansing to close to 20-21
>Vanderbilt would close out the match with the final four points

>Ava Gronemeyer made her collegiate debut
>Lansing recorded her first career double-double
