Anteaters Topple Montana State, 3-1

CORVALLIS, Ore. – UC Irvine's offense came alive to close out the Asics Invitational with a 3-1 win over Montana State (21-25, 25-13, 25-19, 25-15) at Gill Coliseum Saturday afternoon.

UC Irvine hit .282 (55-15-142), the second highest mark of the year.

Setter Jessica Bates, playing in only her second match of the season, recorded a triple-double with 13 kills, 11 set assists and 10 digs. Her kills and digs were career-highs.

Senior Kendra MacDonald had a season-high 14 kills to lead the Anteaters. The outside hitter also added eight digs.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
>Libero Campbell Jensen had a season-high 24 digs, the third most by a Big West player
>Outside hitter Kendra Duffey totaled nine kills and three total blocks
>Setter Nicole Feliciano recorded 29 set assists, nine digs, three kills and three total blocks (1 solo)
>Oregon native Lillian Lansing hit .667 (4-0-6) in the win
>Middle blocker Elizabeth Miller hit .625, matching her career-high with five kills (5-0-8) and had three total blocks (1 solo)
>Madison Triplett continued her solid defensive play with seven digs to go with three kills and an ace
>Both teams registered eight blocks and six aces, while the Anteaters held the advantage in digs 64-59
>Montana State hit .120 (42-25-142) and was led by Karli Heidemann's 17 kills

FIRST SET
>An Elizabeth Miller kill at 3-3 was followed by three kills and an ace by Montana State to create some separation, 7-4
>The Bobcats would remain in control with a 15-9 lead at the media timeout
>A kill by Kendra MacDonald and an ace by Nicole Feliciano  made it 14-20
>Kills by Kendra Duffey and Miller and a block by the duo narrowed the margin, 17-21
>A Bobcat attack error and an ace by Feliciano forced a Montana State timeout, 20-23
>A UCI service error out of the timeout was followed by a kill by Feliciano and an Anteater attack error, 25-21

SECOND SET
>Kills by Jessica Bates, Ally Bolden and Duffey helped UCI to a 4-2 lead
>A Bobcat attack error and an block by Feliciano and Miller increased the lead to 6-3
>A 6-1 run by UCI that was started by three consecutive kills by MacDonald gave the Anteaters a 13-4 lead
>UCI peeled off seven in a row, including kills by Duffey and Feliciano and two by MacDonald to stretch the lead to 21-8
>Montana State would score the next four before the Anteaters recorded three of the final four points with Madison Triplett putting away the set winner, 25-13

THIRD SET
>A pair of Bobcat attack errors helped UCI out to a 2-0 lead
>A kill by MacDonald and an ace by Campbell Jensen moved the Anteaters out to a 5-2 advantage
>Kills by Bates and MacDonald were on either side of a Bobcat attack error, 8-4
>A kill and solo block by Duffey extended the gap to 13-8
>A kill by Bates and two block assists by Bolden, one with Feliciano and one with Duffey made it 20-15
>UCI finished out the set on kills by Miller and Bates, 25-19

FOURTH SET
>The Bobcats held an early 3-0 lead until kills by MacDonald and Bates plus a MSU attack error evened the score
>A kill, block and ace gave Montana State the first significant lead, 10-6
>A solo block by Miller plus an ace and kill by Triplett tightened the score, 10-11
>UCI exploded with a 13-0 run to get to match point 24-14. The Bobcats committed seven errors with Lansing adding two kills and Bates firing two aces in the run
>Following a service error, MacDonald ended the match with a kill, 25-15

NOTES
>Both teams are now 4-5 with UCI snapping a four-match losing streak
>Ally Bolden has recorded a kill and block in every match this season, totaling four kills and rejecting two Bobcat attack attempts
