No. 22 Anteaters Top Yale, 1-0

IRVINE, Calif. --- UC Irvine men's soccer completed an unbeaten stretch to open the season going 5-0-1 in Anteater Stadium capped by a 1-0 victory Friday night over Yale.

Taking Charge
  • The opening to the match was filled with Anteater soccer grabbing majority of the possession
  • Yale would put up the first shot and kept creating chances despite UCI's dominant 83% of possession
  • The strategy would pay off for the 'Eaters getting on the scoreboard in the 13th minute
    • A set piece along the right wing was chipped in by Brady Treinen right onto Gustavo Gonzalez who would head it down toward the near post
    • The shot was off target, but Hunny Yoo was there to snag it and fed it back across goal finding Gonzalez for the finish and the 1-0 lead
  • UCI kept possession and built more chances including a pair shortly after by Marcus Lee that were saved
  • Agaton Pourshahidi had one of the better chances finding space at the top of the box in the 35th minute curling it just wide
  • Braden Ferreira hit one from distance in the 40th minute on the line that floated just inches high of the bar to conclude a 1-0 half
  • Yale's best chance of the match happened in the 34th minute with return fire off a clearance that dipped over Joe O'Shaughnessy hitting the crossbar before bounding back out
Lights Out
  • The beginning of the second half was delayed after half of Anteater Stadium fell into darkness. Play begin with half of the stadium still lit, and the lights returned illuminating the entire pitch about five minutes into the action
  • The outage did not deter the two sides searching for more chances. UCI had more of them in the early going
    • Misael Gonzalez Lopez had a shot tipped wide in the 48th minute, and Marcus Lee had one of his tipped as well in the 63rd minute
    • The attack also earned five corner kicks in the first 30 minutes of the half before any offensive action for the Bulldogs
  • Yale turned the tide around the 75th minute holding more of the possession and managed their first shot on goal in the 77th minute
  • The Bulldogs continued to bear down on goal with four more shots in a seven-minute span, but could not guide one on goal
UC Irvine 1, Yale 0
  • The win makes it two victories in a row and six consecutive unbeaten for UC Irvine in its six matches at home to open the season
    • UCI evens its all-time series with the Bulldogs now at 1-1 and it improves to 4-3 against the Ivy League in its history
    • The win Friday night marks the 350th all-time for UC Irvine men's soccer
  • Joe O'Shaughnessy in net turned in another clean sheet for the team's fifth and his fourth. The 'Eaters have allowed a total of one goal in six matches as he picked up one save on the match
