No. 8 Anteaters Win 5-1 in Angel Stadium

ANAHEIM, Calif. --- UC Irvine baseball took down crosstown rival Cal State Fullerton Tuesday night in a non-conference meeting in Angel Stadium putting up a 5-1 victory.
  • The first-ever game for the Anteaters in Angel Stadium was played in front of 1,863 fans between the long-time Orange County rivals.
  • UC Irvine's pitching was the story of the game along with fine defensive work
    • Finnegan Wall got the start going three innings and striking out three
      • He was responsible for the one run on the evening, but got a massive boost from Frankie Carney with a dart to home plate to nail another runner trying to score in the third
    • Jack Ross took his lead adding four shutout frames in the middle innings with four strikeouts and coming away with the win
    • David Butler got into a bases loaded jam as he came in for the eighth inning, but induced a double play started by James Castagnola to escape without a run
    • Ricky Ojeda cleaned things up in the ninth striking out all three hitters he faced to finish out the win
  • UCI's offense was timely Tuesday night making good on seven hits, nine walks, and four hit batsmen
    • Will Bermudez got everything started in the second inning doubling into the corner for a 1-0 lead
    • UCI started a rally with two out nobody on base in the third inning with two walks before Castagnola ripped a single to score another run
    • Two more walks including a bases loaded pass to Bermudez in the inning made it a 3-0 lead 
    • The offenses went quiet until the eighth inning when Colin Yeaman shot a ball through the left side plating two more runs and open up a 5-1 lead
  • Anthony Martinez provided a three-hit game and scored twice right in the middle of all the offensive threats
  • The win for the 'Eaters is their eighth straight as they improve to 33-9 on the season. UCI is now 7-2 all-time in games played in MLB ballparks
Next up is more Big West action starting Friday night vs. UC San Diego; first pitch is 6:00 p.m. in Anteater Ballpark.
