Distance Runners Lead UCI on Thursday

AZUSA, Calif. - The UC Irvine men's distance crew continued to put up impressive performances on the second day of the Bryan Clay Invitational Thursday at Cougar Stadium.
 
Juan Chantaca finished 10th out of 31 in Heat 1 of the 5000m Open A. Chantaca clocked a personal-record 14:09.52, which ranks ninth on UCI's all-time charts. He is the first Anteater to crack the program's top-10 in the 5K since 2007.
 
Juan Sanchez also notched a lifetime-best 14:35.24 to finish 19th out of 109 in the 5000m Open C.
 
Angel Cordero registered a personal-best 1:48.69 to place 14th in a field of 132 athletes in the 800m Invite. Cordero trimmed .19 seconds off his No. 5 time in school history.
 
 
WALNUT, Calif. - Seniors Liam Miksic and Logan Peyton kicked off the Mt. SAC Relays in the javelin Thursday at Hilmer Lodge Stadium.
 
Miksic had another impressive series where he threw for over 200 feet on all six attempts. His best mark of the meet came in the final round where he hit 67.12 meters (220-2). Miksic was third overall, and was the top collegiate finisher in the Invitational section.
 
In the Collegiate section, Peyton placed fourth with a best of 62.13m (203-10). He also recorded his top mark of the evening on his sixth and final attempt to climb five spots in the standings.
 
 
LONG BEACH, Calif. - UC Irvine's sprinters, hurdlers and throwers were in action at the Pacific Coast Invitational Thursday at Long Beach State's Jack Rose Track.
 
Jacob Hawkins had the Anteaters' best finish as he was fourth out of 48 in the shot put. Hawkins was just shy of his season best with a toss of 17.82 meters (58-5.75). He also led the 'Eaters in the discus where he placed 12th in a field of 58 athletes (52.48m/172-2).
 
On the track, Alex Skalmowski ran a wind-aided personal-record 10.62 in the 100m to come in 20th out of 81. Max Daniels added a wind-aided season-best 10.63 to take 23rd.
 
Bryce Bushnell clocked a 200m season-best 21.47 for a top-20 showing.

UC Irvine will close out action at the Bryan Clay Invitational tomorrow in the 1500m. The Anteaters are also set to continue action at the Mt. SAC Relays, while starting the Beach Invitational on Friday.
