IRVINE, Calif. --- UC Irvine baseball scored a series win to start Big West play winning the decisive matchup Sunday, 10-1, over Long Beach State at Anteater Ballpark.
- Trevor Hansen led the way on the mound after a first-inning run holding the Dirtbags hitless on his way to a career high seven innings pitched
- He also struck out nine hitters, also a career high, including six consecutive at one point as he improved to 2-0 on the season
- The bats backed him up starting in the first inning
- After going down 1-0, UCI put the first two hitters on base only for Anthony Martinez to pelt a three-run home run out to right field and take the lead back, 3-1
- The score stayed quiet until a loud fourth inning for UC Irvine
- UCI got a run in and loaded the bases from three walks, a hit batsman, and a pair of wild pitches to lead 4-1 and set the inning up
- Will Bermudez got some help from a ball in the sun to single home another run and lead 5-1
- Colin Yeaman had the crushing blow into the left-center alley tripling home everyone for an 8-1 lead
- UCI's 6-run inning commenced as Anthony Martinez dribbled a ball to third base that was thrown away to let Yeaman score and make it 9-1
- James Castagnola added the 10th run with a line drive double with two outs to score Zach Fjelstad in the seventh to complete the 10-1
- UCI starts Big West play 2-1 and are now 11-4 overall winners of eight of their last nine
- The offense needed just six hits with four of them scoring runs. Will Bermudez had the only multi-hit game on Sunday
UC Irvine now heads out on the road for 19 days and the next eight games starting Tuesday, March 11 at UCLA before a weekend series at CSUN.
